The 5 Day Ashgabat Yangikala Darvaza Tour is a great way to discover Turkmenistan’s highlights. From white-marbled Ashgabat to the famous Yangikala Canyons and the burning Darvaza Gas Crater, this tour offers adventure and history, ending at the Kunya Urgench border.

This tour begins with arrival in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, and covers some of the most impressive places in the country before concluding with an exit through the northern border. You will see the extraordinary “white city” of Ashgabat, the stunning Yangikala canyons, the mysterious Darvaza gas crater known as the “Gates of Hell,” as well as the ancient ruins of Kunya Urgench, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. This route also includes visits to the Kow Ata thermal lake and the unique village of Nokhur, allowing you to experience the diversity of Turkmenistan’s landscapes – from the modern capital and desert wonders to historical monuments and natural beauties.

Day 1: Arrival in Ashgabat – City Tour

Day 2: Ashgabat – Yangikala Canyons

Drive to Yangikala Canyons (~600km to Balkanabat, then 147km to Yangikala)

Day 3: Yangikala – Balkanabat – Kow Ata – Nokhur – Ashgabat

Morning at the canyons
Return journey toward Ashgabat via Balkanabat (147km from Yangikala)
From Balkanabat, continue to Ashgabat (430km)
Visit to Kow Ata underground thermal lake
Stop at the unique mountain village of Nokhur
Evening arrival in Ashgabat
Overnight in Ashgabat

Day 4: Ashgabat – Darvaza Gas Crater

Morning departure to Darvaza (271km, ~4.5 hours)
Visits to Water Crater and Mud Crater en route
Arrival at the Gas Crater by late afternoon
Evening viewing of the “Gates of Hell” Dinner at nearby yurt camp
Overnight in yurts or tents at Darvaza

Day 5: Darvaza – Kunya Urgench – Border Crossing

Drive north to Dashoguz and Kunya Urgench
Exploration of UNESCO World Heritage site at Kunya Urgench
Lunch en route
Transfer to Shavat or Khojeli border crossing for departure
