Tour Overview

The 2-Day Turkmenistan Tour from Ashgabat to Bukhara is designed for travelers who want to cross Turkmenistan efficiently while visiting Ancient Merv. Begin in Ashgabat, travel east through the country, explore the UNESCO-listed archaeological site of Merv and continue to the Farap border near Bukhara.

Begin in Ashgabat after arrival at the international airport and spend your first day discovering the capital's distinctive white-marble architecture, monumental avenues, cultural landmarks and modern cityscape with a private local guide. The sightseeing programme remains flexible so that it can be adjusted around your flight arrival time and personal interests.

On the second day, leave Ashgabat and travel east across Turkmenistan toward the historic Merv oasis. Explore Ancient Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the greatest former cities of the Silk Road, including monumental Seljuk architecture, mud-brick fortresses and archaeological remains representing different periods of Central Asian history.

After the Merv sightseeing programme, continue toward Turkmenabat and the Farap border crossing. From there, cross into Uzbekistan for your onward journey to Bukhara. This itinerary is especially suitable for travellers who want to combine an international arrival in Ashgabat with the country's most important Silk Road heritage before continuing overland into Uzbekistan.

2-Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1 — Ashgabat International Airport → Ashgabat City Tour

Your Turkmenistan journey begins upon arrival at Ashgabat International Airport (ASB).

After landing, complete immigration, passport control, baggage collection and customs procedures.

Your Darvaza Tour guide or driver will meet you after arrival and assist with the beginning of your programme.

Depending on the actual flight arrival time, transfer first for breakfast, refreshments or a short rest before beginning your guided introduction to Ashgabat.

Private Ashgabat Discovery

Spend the day exploring Turkmenistan's capital with a private local guide.

Ashgabat is known for its extraordinary concentration of white-marble buildings, broad ceremonial avenues, landscaped parks, monumental squares and distinctive modern architecture.

Rather than following a rigid sequence, your guide will adapt the sightseeing programme according to your arrival time, interests and the accessibility of individual sites.

Possible highlights may include major national monuments, mosques, public squares, panoramic viewpoints, architectural landmarks and other important cultural sites.

The programme is designed to give you a broad introduction to both modern Turkmenistan and the historical background of the country before your journey east toward Merv.

Lunch and dinner breaks can be arranged at suitable local restaurants during the day according to your preferred pace.

In the evening, transfer to your hotel and check in.

Overnight: Ak Altyn Hotel 4*, Ashgabat.
Included meals: Breakfast according to the confirmed accommodation package.

Day 2 — Ashgabat → Ancient Merv → Turkmenabat → Farap Border / Bukhara

Begin the day with an early breakfast at your hotel.

At approximately 07:30, check out and depart Ashgabat for the long-distance journey east toward the Mary region.

Ashgabat → Mary Region

Travel along the main Ashgabat–Mary motorway.

The planned distance is approximately 360 km, with an estimated driving time of around 3.5 to 4 hours under normal road conditions.

As you travel east, the urban landscape gradually gives way to the open plains and desert scenery of southern Turkmenistan.

Arrive in the Mary region and take a lunch break in Mary or Bayramaly before beginning your archaeological visit.

Ancient Merv UNESCO World Heritage Site

Continue to Ancient Merv, one of the most important historical sites in Turkmenistan and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Once a major centre of trade, scholarship and political power along the Silk Road, Merv developed through several successive urban settlements over many centuries.

Your guided sightseeing programme focuses on the principal monuments of the archaeological park.

Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar

Visit the monumental 12th-century mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, one of the most recognisable surviving structures from the Seljuk period.

Its massive proportions and architectural design reflect the importance of Merv during one of the city's most influential historical periods.

Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala

Explore the impressive mud-brick structures of Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala.

Their unusual corrugated exterior walls make them among the most distinctive archaeological monuments of the Merv oasis.

Askhabs Mausoleums

Visit the sacred mausoleum complex connected with early Islamic traditions in the region.

Your guide will explain its religious significance and historical context.

Ancient Sardoba and Water Structures

See examples of the sophisticated systems that helped store and manage water in this arid environment.

These remains illustrate how settlements and travellers survived along the desert trade routes of Central Asia.

Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala

Explore the remains of major fortified areas representing earlier stages in Merv's development.

From selected points around the archaeological complex, you can appreciate the extraordinary scale of the ancient settlement.

Additional historical remains may be visited when time permits.

Merv → Turkmenabat

After completing the Merv programme, continue northeast toward Turkmenabat.

The planned journey is approximately 240 km, normally taking around 2.5 hours via the main motorway.

Turkmenabat

Arrive in Turkmenabat in the evening.

Depending on the day's timing, stop for dinner at a local restaurant before continuing toward the border.

Turkmenabat is one of the major cities of eastern Turkmenistan and lies close to the historic Amu Darya corridor.

Turkmenabat → Farap Border

Continue approximately 40 km toward the Farap border crossing.

The final transfer usually takes around 40 minutes, depending on traffic and local conditions.

Upon arrival, our team will assist with Turkmenistan departure procedures within the areas permitted by border regulations.

Cross into Uzbekistan through the Farap–Alat border and continue toward Bukhara.

End of tour services.

Overnight: None.

Ashgabat — 1 night

Ak Altyn Hotel 4*

Accommodation in Ashgabat is planned at Ak Altyn Hotel, a centrally located hotel with convenient access to the main sightseeing areas, restaurants and major city attractions.

The hotel is officially classified as a 4-star property, although it is an older-established hotel with a more traditional interior style compared with newer luxury hotels in Ashgabat. We use Ak Altyn because of its practical location, reliable service and easy access to the main places included in the city sightseeing programme.

Breakfast is included. Twin, double or single room arrangements can be provided according to the confirmed booking.

Turkmenistan Visa Information

Turkmenistan now uses an electronic visa system for international travelers. For e-Visa applications, a separate traditional Letter of Invitation (LOI) is not required.

After your tour is confirmed, Darvaza Tour will assist you with the e-Visa application process. We will provide you with the list of required documents and information, help prepare the application and check the details before submission.

Once the application has been completed, it is submitted through the relevant migration procedure for consideration by the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan. The final decision on the e-Visa is made by the migration authorities.

After approval, the electronic visa will be provided before your trip. We recommend keeping both a digital and printed copy with your travel documents.

Visa-related requirements, processing procedures and applicable fees may be updated by the authorities. Darvaza Tour will provide the latest instructions before submission.

Thank you Gozel for all your assistance up til the start of the tour, with putting together our applications for the LoI and any questions I had about the trip to Turkmenistan! Thank you to Agamyrat as well for being a great friendly guide and giving very helpful explanations, and to the driver as well (sorry didnt get his name!) for his experience and expertise in navigating difficult roads in record time.

I had a wonderful experience travelling through Turkmenistan in my private tour. The whole trip was well organised from start to finish, and communication before the tour was always quick. My guide Aiza was perfect, she was like my best friend throughout the whole trip. And drivers were experienced. The drivers were very experienced and knew the routes well, so we always reached our destinations smoothly and without delays. In the future, I would love to come back to Turkmenistan with my friends for a longer trip and explore more of the country. I would also be happy to recommend Darvaza Tour to friends and anyone I know who is planning to visit Turkmenistan.

We had a fantastic 3 day tour of Darvaza Gas Crater and Ashgabat. I highly recommend the company who were very easy and accommodating to deal with from start to finish. We started planning this trip a year ago and the company gave plenty of help and advice before we agreed to use them. They made the visa process as simple as possible by asking once for our detailed information and then doing it on our behalf before sending us our LOIs. They adapted the itinerary to our preferences and booked accommodation that we wanted. Very quick replies by e-mail and were obliging with any questions I had about other aspects of Central Asia, such as currency. The guide (Ruslan) was extremely friendly and accommodating. It was clear that his main objective was to make sure that we had a good time and he did his very best to achieve this. His English was excellent and it made it very easy to understand what he was explaining to us and he was adaptable to do whatever we wanted. The 2 drivers were also very good who had specific local knowledge of the 2 locations and acted as an additional guide, for which Ruslan translated. Between the 3 of them, the itinerary was often adapted to make sure that we were making the best use of time and doing what we wanted. We were very happy with all 3 of them and it made a change from trips in other countries as it felt like a friend was showing us around his place rather than a formal guide. The border crossing at Shavat was slow (3 hours), so be prepared for that. Firstly we ate dinner at Bay Town restaurant in Dashoguz. This was upmarket and wouldn’t look out of place in Europe, but had cheap prices. Ruslan chatted to us here and asked our opinions on his plans. Before leaving the town we went to the supermarket to buy supplies for the camp site. This allowed us to pick food which we like to eat. Darvaza was obviously the highlight of the trip. Seeing it in the dark is amazing and I strongly recommend anyone going and seeing it, particularly before it slowly dies out. We were allowed as much time as we wanted there. Ruslan acted as a great photographer and adapted himself to the angles that we wanted. The dinner and morning afters breakfast was cooked at the camp site by the employees there using the food that we bought. The Yurt itself was spacious and comfortable, a great experience. It was not as cold as I expected in the desert overnight. It had 2 single beds and ample room to move around. There was a separate toilet block and no showers. We awoke early to see sunrise and the surroundings looked very different in the daylight. We left at 7:15am. In Ashgabat, firstly we had lunch at another very good restaurant with lots of tasty options at very good prices. I had chicken & pineapple curry and we shared a crispy eggplant salad. Then we went to the horse stables booked for 2pm. This was interesting to see the Turkmen horses and ride a horse. Afterwards we drove around and saw some buildings and went to the Turkmen museum. I commented that we were less interested in ancient history than modern history and then our guide & driver showed their adaptability again to take us to a different museum which had modern history including Russian occupation and the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake. This was interesting and a better museum in our opinions. We rode the Ferris wheel. This was great and we were given a souvenir fridge magnet too. The views were brilliant. We visited again after dark to see it lit up. After this we went to the bazaar to buy souvenirs. The stall was a recommendation from the driver and there were multiple good and cheap options. In the evening we had a drive around to see the lit up buildings. The driver was happy for us to stop and take photos. He knew good routes and avoided traffic to make the best use of time. We saw several monuments, the mall and Olympic village. We ate dinner in a modern shopping centre at a high quality French styled restaurant, frequented by Turkmens. This was very tasty food with local options and a good idea to see how local city life is like.

I would like to thank the DarvazaTour team for helping with all the nuances. What about the guide Mekan, at first I didn’t immediately understand what kind of person he was, but he turned out to be very kind and polite, helped me until the moment of departure and made me a delicious gift. And since lamb is very expensive in California, he decided to please me with lamb. A very attentive young man. I hope that I will still be able to visit this wonderful country and get to know the whole team in person.
