3-Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1 — Bukhara / Farap Border → Ancient Merv → Ashgabat

🛂 Farap Border Meeting

Your Turkmenistan journey begins at the Farap border crossing, conveniently reached from Bukhara via Alat.

The planned meeting time is approximately 09:00 on the Turkmenistan side. After completing immigration, passport and customs procedures, our local team will coordinate your meeting with the guide inside the permitted border area.

🚙 Journey toward the Merv Oasis

Leave the border region and travel southwest toward the historic Merv oasis.

The journey passes through the landscapes of eastern Turkmenistan before reaching the Mary region, one of the country's most important historical areas.

🍽️ Lunch in Mary / Bayramaly

Stop for lunch at a local restaurant before beginning the archaeological visit.

🏛️ Ancient Merv — UNESCO World Heritage Site

Spend the afternoon exploring one of Central Asia's great Silk Road archaeological landscapes with your guide.

The programme includes several of Ancient Merv's most important monuments:

🕌 Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar
Visit the monumental 12th-century mausoleum of the Seljuk ruler Sultan Ahmad Sanjar, one of the architectural symbols of Ancient Merv.

🏰 Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala
See the imposing mud-brick structures distinguished by their unusual corrugated exterior walls.

🕋 Askhabs Mausoleums
Explore this important religious memorial complex associated with companions of the Prophet Muhammad.

💧 Ancient Sardoba
Learn how water was stored and managed in this arid Silk Road environment.

🏺 Erk Kala & Gyaur Kala
Explore remains of the earlier fortified settlements that demonstrate the extraordinary historical scale of Merv.

Depending on timing, other smaller archaeological remains inside the park can also be visited.

🚗 Drive to Ashgabat

After completing the Merv tour, continue west toward Ashgabat along the main Mary–Ashgabat road.

The drive is approximately 360 km and usually requires around 3.5–4 hours, depending on road conditions and stops.

🌃 Evening Arrival in Ashgabat

Arrive in the capital in the evening and transfer to your hotel.

If timing permits, dinner can be arranged at a local restaurant before hotel check-in.

🏨 Overnight: Ak Altyn Hotel, Ashgabat

Day 2 — Full-Day Ashgabat Tour → Overnight Train to Turkmenabat

🍽️ Breakfast

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before beginning your private sightseeing programme.

🏛️ Private Ashgabat City Tour

Spend the day exploring Turkmenistan's capital with your local guide.

Rather than following a rigid sightseeing schedule, the route can be adapted according to your interests, local opening times and the places already accessible on your travel date.

Possible sightseeing can include monumental public squares, white-marble architecture, mosques, memorial complexes, museums and panoramic city viewpoints.

📸 White-Marble Ashgabat

Take time to experience the capital's distinctive urban style, with its broad avenues, monumental buildings and carefully designed public spaces.

🕌 Culture & Heritage

Your guide can combine the modern city with selected historical and cultural sites to provide a wider picture of Turkmenistan.

🍽️ Lunch

Enjoy a break for lunch at a local restaurant during the sightseeing programme.

🛍️ Local Experience

When time allows, the day can also include a bazaar or other everyday local stop.

🍽️ Dinner before the Train

Before heading to the railway station, enjoy dinner in Ashgabat.

Depending on the final railway departure time, you may either have a sit-down meal or purchase drinks, fruit and snacks for the overnight journey.

🚉 Ashgabat Railway Station

Transfer to Ashgabat Railway Station in the evening.

Board the overnight sleeper train bound for Turkmenabat.

🛏️ Sleeper Compartment

Accommodation is arranged in a comfortable 4-berth sleeper compartment.

Whenever available, Darvaza Tour arranges the full compartment for your booking even when travelling as one or two guests, providing additional space and privacy.

Clean bedding, pillows and sleeping berths are provided for the overnight journey.

🚆 Overnight: Ashgabat → Turkmenabat sleeper train

Day 3 — Turkmenabat → Amul Fortress → Gok Bazaar → Amu Darya → Farap Border / Bukhara

🚉 Morning Arrival in Turkmenabat

Arrive at Turkmenabat Railway Station in the morning.

Your driver will meet you at the station and begin the final day's programme.

🏛️ Turkmenabat Cultural Exploration

Spend the morning discovering several highlights of Turkmenistan's eastern region.

The schedule remains flexible according to your arrival time and border plans.

🏺 Amul Fortress

Visit the remains of ancient Amul, an important settlement that once stood on one of the major trade routes linking Merv, Bukhara and Khorezm.

The site helps connect modern Turkmenabat with the much older Silk Road history of the Amu Darya region.

🛍️ Gok Bazaar

Continue to one of the city's local markets.

Walk through stalls selling fruit, vegetables, spices, dried products and everyday goods while experiencing the atmosphere of local life in Lebap.

🏙️ Turkmenabat City Orientation

Take a short drive through the central areas of the city to see modern avenues, public buildings and everyday urban life in eastern Turkmenistan.

🍽️ Lunch

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and try regional Turkmen dishes before heading toward the border.

🌊 Amu Darya River

On the way toward Farap, make a scenic stop near the Amu Darya River.

The river has shaped the history, agriculture and trade routes of Central Asia for centuries and remains one of the defining geographical features of the region.

🚗 Transfer to Farap Border

Continue approximately 40–45 km from Turkmenabat toward the Farap border crossing.

🛂 Border Assistance

Upon arrival, our team will assist with Turkmenistan customs and departure immigration procedures within the permitted border area.

After completing the formalities, cross into Uzbekistan and continue toward Bukhara.

Processing takes 7 business days as standard, or 3 days / 24 hours with urgent options. The final decision is made by the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan.

After approval, keep a digital and a printed copy of your e-Visa with your passport. e-Visa assistance is included in this tour; official visa fees are paid separately.

Thank you Gozel for all your assistance up til the start of the tour, with putting together our applications for the LoI and any questions I had about the trip to Turkmenistan! Thank you to Agamyrat as well for being a great friendly guide and giving very helpful explanations, and to the driver as well (sorry didnt get his name!) for his experience and expertise in navigating difficult roads in record time.

I had a wonderful experience travelling through Turkmenistan in my private tour. The whole trip was well organised from start to finish, and communication before the tour was always quick. My guide Aiza was perfect, she was like my best friend throughout the whole trip. And drivers were experienced. The drivers were very experienced and knew the routes well, so we always reached our destinations smoothly and without delays. In the future, I would love to come back to Turkmenistan with my friends for a longer trip and explore more of the country. I would also be happy to recommend Darvaza Tour to friends and anyone I know who is planning to visit Turkmenistan.

We had a fantastic 3 day tour of Darvaza Gas Crater and Ashgabat. I highly recommend the company who were very easy and accommodating to deal with from start to finish. We started planning this trip a year ago and the company gave plenty of help and advice before we agreed to use them. They made the visa process as simple as possible by asking once for our detailed information and then doing it on our behalf before sending us our LOIs. They adapted the itinerary to our preferences and booked accommodation that we wanted. Very quick replies by e-mail and were obliging with any questions I had about other aspects of Central Asia, such as currency. The guide (Ruslan) was extremely friendly and accommodating. It was clear that his main objective was to make sure that we had a good time and he did his very best to achieve this. His English was excellent and it made it very easy to understand what he was explaining to us and he was adaptable to do whatever we wanted. The 2 drivers were also very good who had specific local knowledge of the 2 locations and acted as an additional guide, for which Ruslan translated. Between the 3 of them, the itinerary was often adapted to make sure that we were making the best use of time and doing what we wanted. We were very happy with all 3 of them and it made a change from trips in other countries as it felt like a friend was showing us around his place rather than a formal guide. The border crossing at Shavat was slow (3 hours), so be prepared for that. Firstly we ate dinner at Bay Town restaurant in Dashoguz. This was upmarket and wouldn’t look out of place in Europe, but had cheap prices. Ruslan chatted to us here and asked our opinions on his plans. Before leaving the town we went to the supermarket to buy supplies for the camp site. This allowed us to pick food which we like to eat. Darvaza was obviously the highlight of the trip. Seeing it in the dark is amazing and I strongly recommend anyone going and seeing it, particularly before it slowly dies out. We were allowed as much time as we wanted there. Ruslan acted as a great photographer and adapted himself to the angles that we wanted. The dinner and morning afters breakfast was cooked at the camp site by the employees there using the food that we bought. The Yurt itself was spacious and comfortable, a great experience. It was not as cold as I expected in the desert overnight. It had 2 single beds and ample room to move around. There was a separate toilet block and no showers. We awoke early to see sunrise and the surroundings looked very different in the daylight. We left at 7:15am. In Ashgabat, firstly we had lunch at another very good restaurant with lots of tasty options at very good prices. I had chicken & pineapple curry and we shared a crispy eggplant salad. Then we went to the horse stables booked for 2pm. This was interesting to see the Turkmen horses and ride a horse. Afterwards we drove around and saw some buildings and went to the Turkmen museum. I commented that we were less interested in ancient history than modern history and then our guide & driver showed their adaptability again to take us to a different museum which had modern history including Russian occupation and the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake. This was interesting and a better museum in our opinions. We rode the Ferris wheel. This was great and we were given a souvenir fridge magnet too. The views were brilliant. We visited again after dark to see it lit up. After this we went to the bazaar to buy souvenirs. The stall was a recommendation from the driver and there were multiple good and cheap options. In the evening we had a drive around to see the lit up buildings. The driver was happy for us to stop and take photos. He knew good routes and avoided traffic to make the best use of time. We saw several monuments, the mall and Olympic village. We ate dinner in a modern shopping centre at a high quality French styled restaurant, frequented by Turkmens. This was very tasty food with local options and a good idea to see how local city life is like.

I would like to thank the DarvazaTour team for helping with all the nuances. What about the guide Mekan, at first I didn’t immediately understand what kind of person he was, but he turned out to be very kind and polite, helped me until the moment of departure and made me a delicious gift. And since lamb is very expensive in California, he decided to please me with lamb. A very attentive young man. I hope that I will still be able to visit this wonderful country and get to know the whole team in person.
