Tour Overview
The 4-Day Turkmenistan Tour from Bukhara to Khiva is designed for travelers crossing Turkmenistan from east to west. Enter through the Farap border near Bukhara, explore Ancient Merv and Ashgabat, spend the night near the Darvaza Gas Crater and continue through Kunya-Urgench before exiting toward Khiva. Your first day is dedicated to Ancient Merv, one of the most important archaeological landscapes on the Silk Road and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before continuing to Ashgabat for the night.
Day 2 offers a full private exploration of the capital. Discover Ashgabat's monumental white-marble architecture, ceremonial boulevards, cultural landmarks and distinctive cityscape at a relaxed pace with your local guide.
On Day 3, continue sightseeing in Ashgabat before travelling north into the Karakum Desert. Stop at the Water and Mud craters and reach the Darvaza Gas Crater by sunset. Spend the evening beside the flames, enjoy dinner at the desert camp and stay overnight in a traditional Turkmen yurt. The final day continues north to Kunya-Urgench, another UNESCO-listed historical centre filled with medieval minarets, mausoleums and Silk Road monuments. From there, choose the border crossing that best suits your onward journey in Uzbekistan: Shavat for Khiva and Urgench, or Hojaili for Nukus and the Aral Sea region.
This itinerary is ideal for travellers who want to cross Turkmenistan overland while combining its most important historical, cultural and desert highlights within a well-balanced four-day programme.
4-Day Tour Itinerary
Day 1 — Farap Border → Turkmenabat → Ancient Merv → Ashgabat
Your Turkmenistan journey begins at the Farap border crossing, the main land entry point for travellers arriving from Bukhara.

Stop for an early lunch at a local restaurant before beginning the journey southwest toward the Merv oasis.
Continue along the main Turkmenabat–Mary motorway. The planned distance is approximately 240 km, with an estimated driving time of around 2.5 hours under normal conditions.
Upon arrival in the Merv region, begin your guided visit to Ancient Merv, one of the great historical centres of Central Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The tour includes the principal monuments of the archaeological park.
- Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar — one of the finest surviving monuments of the Seljuk period and a defining landmark of Ancient Merv.
- Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala — monumental mud-brick structures known for their unusual corrugated exterior walls.
- Askhabs Mausoleums — sacred monuments associated with early Islamic history.
- Ancient Sardoba and water-storage structures — examples of the systems used to preserve water in the desert environment.
- Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala — ancient fortified areas illustrating the long history and scale of the Merv settlement complex.
Where time allows, additional ruins within the archaeological park can be visited according to your interests.
After the Merv programme, continue west toward Ashgabat.
The road from the Mary region to the capital covers approximately 360 km and usually takes around 3.5 to 4 hours.
Dinner can be arranged either before departure from Mary or at a suitable restaurant stop along the highway, depending on timing and your preference.

Day 3 — Ashgabat → Water Crater → Mud Crater → Darvaza Gas Crater

Take a relaxed lunch break before leaving the capital.
In the afternoon, depart Ashgabat and travel north into the Karakum Desert.
The planned distance to Darvaza is approximately 270 km, with an estimated driving time of around 3.5 hours.
Some sections of the desert road are rough and uneven, so travel time may vary.
Along the route, stop at the Water Crater and Mud Crater, two unusual geological sites in the Darvaza region.
Continue deeper into the Karakum and arrive at the Darvaza Gas Crater toward sunset.
As darkness falls, the flames inside the crater become much more dramatic against the surrounding desert.
At the nearby camp, enjoy a freshly prepared open-air barbecue dinner.
After dinner, spend additional time near the crater for night-time viewing and photography under the desert sky.
Overnight: Traditional Turkmen yurt camp near Darvaza Gas Crater.
