5 Day Turkmenistan Tour from Bukhara to Khiva via Merv, Yangykala & Darvaza

Your 5 Day Turkmenistan Tour begins with the journey from Bukhara toward the Uzbekistan–Turkmenistan border at Farab. After completing the Uzbek exit formalities, cross the border zone and continue through Turkmen immigration and customs procedures.

Our local Turkmen guide and driver will meet you on the Turkmenistan side of the border. Once the border formalities are completed, begin the short drive toward Turkmenabat, one of the largest cities in eastern Turkmenistan and an important regional center located near the Amu Darya River.

Depending on your border-crossing time, stop in Turkmenabat for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing west toward the Merv oasis.

The journey continues to Ancient Merv, one of the most significant archaeological sites in Central Asia and an important former Silk Road center. During the guided tour, explore the main historical monuments of the enormous archaeological park.

Highlights normally include the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, an impressive monument from the Seljuk period; the distinctive Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala mud-brick fortresses; the Askhabs Mausoleums; and the ancient settlements of Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala. Depending on available time, your guide can also introduce additional ruins and archaeological remains within the Merv complex.

After completing the Ancient Merv sightseeing program, continue west toward Ashgabat.

There will be opportunities to stop for dinner or refreshments during the journey. Arrival in Ashgabat is expected in the evening. After reaching the capital, transfer directly to your hotel and check in.

After breakfast at the hotel, depart Ashgabat and begin a full-day journey west toward Turkmenbashi and the Caspian Sea.

One of the first experiences of the day is a visit to an Akhal-Teke horse farm. The Akhal-Teke is one of Turkmenistan's most famous cultural symbols, known for its distinctive appearance, endurance and long history in the region.

Continue toward Kow Ata, a large underground cave containing a naturally warm lake. Descend into the cave to see its unusual interior and underground water. Travelers who wish to swim can discuss the available time with the guide.

The route then continues toward Nokhur, a remote mountain settlement surrounded by the Kopet Dag Mountains. Nokhur has a very different atmosphere from Ashgabat and offers an opportunity to experience a quieter rural part of Turkmenistan. Depending on timing, explore the village surroundings and local sights before continuing west.

Lunch will be arranged during the journey according to the timing of the day's program.

Continue through western Turkmenistan toward Turkmenbashi, located on the Caspian Sea coast.

After arrival, visit the Awaza National Tourist Zone, Turkmenistan's modern seaside resort area. Depending on the season, available time and your interests, the program may include a drive along the Caspian coastline, a short walk around Awaza or additional sightseeing in Turkmenbashi.

Dinner can be arranged at a local restaurant. Travelers interested in Caspian fish dishes can ask the guide about locally available options.

After dinner, transfer to the hotel.

After an early breakfast, leave Turkmenbashi and travel inland toward Yangykala Canyon, one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in Turkmenistan.

The journey passes through remote western regions before reaching the canyon area. As you approach Yangykala, the flat desert landscape gradually changes into massive multicolored cliffs and unusual rock formations.

On arrival, spend approximately several hours exploring different viewpoints around the canyon. The name Yangykala is commonly associated with the striking red, pink, white and orange layers visible across the cliffs.

Your driver and guide will take you to suitable viewpoints where you can walk, take photographs and appreciate the scale of the landscape. Because the area is remote and largely undeveloped, the experience feels very different from the cities and historical sites visited earlier in the tour.

After completing the Yangykala Canyon visit, begin the long return journey toward Ashgabat.

Lunch will be arranged during the route, with additional stops when needed for rest, refreshments and photographs.

Arrive in Ashgabat in the evening and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant before returning to your hotel.

After breakfast, begin a guided sightseeing tour of Ashgabat, the capital and largest city of Turkmenistan.

The exact city program can remain flexible depending on opening hours and your interests. Typical sightseeing may include some of Ashgabat's major monuments, marble-lined avenues, government districts, parks and important architectural landmarks.

Your guide can also provide explanations about modern Turkmenistan, the city's development and everyday life in the capital.

After the morning sightseeing program, enjoy lunch in Ashgabat.

In the afternoon, leave the capital and travel north into the Karakum Desert toward the famous Darvaza Gas Crater, one of Turkmenistan's best-known attractions.

The scenery gradually changes from the monumental architecture of Ashgabat to the wide-open desert landscapes of central Turkmenistan. Parts of the route toward Darvaza may have challenging road conditions, so travel time can vary.

Arrive near Darvaza toward the evening.

Visit the crater before and after sunset so you can experience how dramatically the appearance changes as darkness falls. After sunset, the glowing crater becomes especially impressive against the dark Karakum Desert.

Dinner will be prepared near the yurt camp. Spend the evening relaxing in the desert, taking photographs and walking near the crater area with your guide.

Afterwards, return to the camp for your overnight stay.

Wake up in the Karakum Desert and enjoy breakfast at the yurt camp.

After breakfast, begin the final stage of your 5 Day Turkmenistan Tour, traveling north from Darvaza toward Dashoguz. This is a long overland journey and some sections of the road can be rough, so several rest stops can be made along the way.

After reaching Dashoguz, stop for lunch at a local restaurant if the schedule allows.

Depending on your border timing, there may also be an opportunity for a short orientation drive through Dashoguz before continuing toward the Uzbekistan border.

Travel to the Shavat border crossing, complete the Turkmenistan exit formalities and cross into Uzbekistan.

After entering Uzbekistan, continue toward Khiva or Urgench according to your onward arrangements.

The Shavat border is conveniently located for travelers continuing their Central Asia journey through Khiva, making this itinerary particularly suitable for combining Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan in one overland route.
