Tour Overview
The 1-Day Turkmenistan Tour from Bukhara is designed for travelers who want to make a short visit to Turkmenistan and explore the historic Dayahatyn Caravanserai. Enter through the Farap border, meet your local guide and driver on the Turkmenistan side, and continue to one of the region’s important Silk Road monuments.
Dayahatyn is an impressive medieval caravanserai associated with the historic trade routes linking the Amu Darya region with Khorezm. Its monumental entrance, decorative brickwork, enclosed courtyard and surviving chambers offer a vivid impression of the infrastructure that once supported merchants and long-distance caravans travelling across Central Asia. After a guided exploration of the complex and a regional lunch during the journey, return south toward the Farap border.
The programme is designed for travellers staying in Bukhara who want to experience Turkmenistan without committing to a multi-day itinerary. In a single day, you can cross an international border, travel through Turkmenistan's desert landscapes and visit a remote Silk Road monument before returning toward Bukhara.
1-Day Tour Itinerary
Day 1 — Bukhara / Farap Border → Dayahatyn Caravanserai → Farap Border / Bukhara
Your one day Turkmenistan journey begins at the Farap border crossing, the principal land gateway for travellers arriving from the Bukhara region.
The planned meeting time on the Turkmenistan side is approximately 09:00.
After completing passport, migration and entry procedures, meet your Darvaza Tour guide inside the permitted border area. Border processing time can vary, so the day's schedule remains flexible around the actual completion of formalities.
Once the group is ready, leave the border region and begin the drive north toward Dayahatyn Caravanserai.
The journey covers approximately 210 km each way and normally requires around 3 hours, depending on road and weather conditions.
As you travel away from the Amu Darya region, the surroundings gradually become more remote, revealing the open landscapes once crossed by traders and caravans travelling between the historical centres of Amul and Khorezm.
Sections of the route include uneven asphalt and rough desert roads, so the journey itself forms part of the experience of reaching this isolated historical site.
Lunch En Route
During the drive, stop at a local roadside restaurant for lunch.
This gives you an opportunity to rest and try regional Turkmen dishes before continuing deeper into the route toward Dayahatyn.
Dayahatyn Caravanserai
Upon arrival, begin a guided exploration of Dayahatyn Caravanserai, one of the notable surviving medieval caravanserais of Turkmenistan.
The complex dates primarily to the medieval period and is particularly known for its decorative brickwork and monumental architectural composition.
During the visit, explore:
- Monumental Entrance Portal — the impressive gateway that once welcomed travellers approaching the fortified roadside complex.
- Decorative Brickwork — examine the detailed patterns created in fired brick, an important feature of medieval Central Asian architecture.
- Central Courtyard — walk through the enclosed interior space around which the caravanserai's rooms were organised.
- Historic Chambers — see surviving spaces once associated with travellers, merchants, storage and caravan operations.
- Outer Walls and Architectural Remains — explore the defensive form of the complex and understand why caravanserais were designed to provide both shelter and security on remote routes.
Your guide will explain Dayahatyn's role in the historic Silk Road network and how caravanserais supported the movement of merchants, goods and travellers between major regional centres.
There will also be time for photographs and a relaxed walk around the site before beginning the return journey.
Return to Farap Border
After completing the sightseeing programme, depart Dayahatyn and travel directly back toward Farap.
The return journey is approximately 210 km, again taking around 3 hours depending on conditions.
The itinerary avoids unnecessary stops on the way back so that sufficient time remains for the border crossing and onward journey into Uzbekistan.
Farap Border & End of Tour
Arrive at the Farap border checkpoint.
Your local team will assist with Turkmenistan departure procedures within the areas permitted by border regulations.
After completing exit formalities, cross into Uzbekistan and continue toward Bukhara.
End of tour services.
Overnight: None.
