4-Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrival in Ashgabat & Discovering the White-Marble Capital

Arrival at Ashgabat International Airport

Your four-day journey through Turkmenistan begins upon arrival at Ashgabat International Airport (ASB). After completing passport control and customs formalities, you will be welcomed by your local Darvaza Tour representative in the arrivals area.

Meet your private guide and driver before travelling into the capital. Depending on your flight arrival time, enjoy breakfast at a local restaurant and prepare for your first sightseeing experience in Turkmenistan.

Private Ashgabat City Tour

Discover Ashgabat, a remarkable capital renowned for its monumental boulevards, white-marble architecture, carefully landscaped parks and striking modern landmarks.

Your guide will arrange a personalised sightseeing programme reflecting your interests and available time. The itinerary may feature:

  • Independence Monument: Admire one of Turkmenistan's most recognisable national monuments, surrounded by impressive landscaped gardens.

  • Neutrality Monument: Discover the symbolism behind the country's international policy of permanent neutrality.

  • Ertogrul Gazi Mosque: Visit a beautiful mosque inspired by classical Ottoman architectural traditions.

  • National Cultural Landmarks: Explore selected monuments, public squares and architectural highlights representing Turkmenistan's heritage and modern identity.

  • Traditional Bazaars and Local Life: Depending on the day and opening hours, experience the atmosphere of a local market and discover Turkmen handicrafts and regional products.

The sightseeing programme remains flexible, allowing your guide to adapt the route to your preferences, arrival time and local access conditions.

Lunch & Traditional Turkmen Cuisine

Take a comfortable break at a local restaurant and discover traditional Turkmen dishes. Your guide can recommend regional specialities and help you choose a meal suited to your preferences.

Afternoon Exploration

Continue exploring the capital's most interesting attractions. Enjoy photography stops, cultural discoveries and opportunities to learn more about daily life in modern Turkmenistan.

Evening Dinner & Hotel Check-in

Finish the day with dinner at a local restaurant before returning to your hotel. Your guide will also explain the arrangements for the following morning's flight to Turkmenbashi.

Overnight: Hotel in Ashgabat.

Day 2 — Ashgabat → Turkmenbashi by Flight → Yangykala Canyon → Balkan Region

Early Morning — Domestic Flight to Turkmenbashi

Begin the day with an early transfer to Ashgabat International Airport for your domestic flight to Turkmenbashi, the country's principal city on the Caspian coast.

The itinerary is planned around an early-morning flight, with a provisional departure time of approximately 06:20, subject to the confirmed airline schedule.

Because of the early departure, your hotel will arrange a packed breakfast box when available under the confirmed accommodation arrangements.

Upon landing at Turkmenbashi Airport, meet your local driver and continue your journey along the Caspian coast.

Turkmenbashi City & Caspian Sea Discovery

Explore selected highlights of Turkmenbashi, a historic port city whose architecture and atmosphere contrast with those of Ashgabat.

During your short orientation tour, you may discover:

  • Historic Turkmenbashi Railway Station: Admire the distinctive architecture of the city's railway station, a reminder of the Caspian region's historical transport connections.

  • Caspian Sea Viewpoints: Stop at scenic locations to photograph the sea and surrounding coastal landscapes.

  • Turkmenbashi City Centre: Enjoy a brief introduction to the city's historical buildings and everyday life.

Optional Awaza Visit: A short excursion to the Awaza National Tourist Zone may be considered upon request if the zone is accessible and the day's schedule permits.

Lunch in Turkmenbashi

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before leaving the coast. Depending on availability, choose from traditional Turkmen dishes or regional seafood specialities.

Journey Across the Western Desert

Depart Turkmenbashi and travel inland toward the remote landscapes of western Turkmenistan.

The route takes you through wide-open plains, rugged desert scenery and increasingly dramatic geological formations.

The journey from Turkmenbashi toward Yangykala Canyon covers approximately 160 km, with travel time depending on road conditions and the selected approach.

Optional Gozli Ata Stop: If time and road conditions allow, your guide may arrange a short visit to the revered Gozli Ata pilgrimage site, surrounded by remarkable desert cliffs. This stop is not guaranteed as part of the standard day's schedule.

Yangykala Canyon — The Colourful Cliffs of Western Turkmenistan

Arrive at Yangykala Canyon, one of Turkmenistan's most extraordinary natural landscapes.

Explore a breathtaking panorama of layered limestone cliffs displaying shades of deep red, pink, orange, cream and white.

These impressive formations reflect the geological history of an ancient marine environment, creating a spectacular contrast with the surrounding desert.

Your guide will take you to suitable viewpoints, where you can appreciate the canyon's vast scale and capture photographs of its unusual colours and formations.

The visit provides opportunities for scenic walks and landscape photography at accessible locations, depending on weather and terrain conditions.

Travel Note: Access to Yangykala includes remote roads and uneven off-road sections. Driving conditions may be rough, and travel times can vary.

Evening — Dinner & Transfer to the Balkan Region

After exploring the canyon, continue toward your overnight destination in the Balkan Region.

Depending on weather conditions and the day's timing, dinner may be arranged as a packed picnic in a suitable scenic location or served at a restaurant near your accommodation.

Continue to your hotel for check-in and relaxation after an adventurous day.

Overnight: Hotel in the Balkan Region, normally Balkanabat or another suitable location according to the confirmed itinerary.

Day 3 — Balkan Region → Nokhur Mountain Village → Kow Ata → Ashgabat

Morning — Breakfast & Departure

After breakfast at your hotel, meet your guide and driver for the next stage of your four-day Turkmenistan journey.

Travel eastward through the Balkan Region, gradually approaching the foothills of the Kopet Dag Mountains.

Along the way, observe the changing scenery as the wide western plains give way to mountain valleys, rocky slopes and rural settlements.

Nokhur Village — Discovering Mountain Traditions

Leave the main highway and follow a scenic mountain road toward Nokhur, a traditional village known for its distinctive cultural heritage.

Situated among the Kopet Dag foothills, Nokhur offers a fascinating contrast to the modern capital and the remote desert landscapes visited the previous day.

During your guided visit, discover the village's characteristic atmosphere and local traditions.

Highlights may include:

  • Traditional Village Life: Observe local customs and the everyday rhythm of a mountain community.

  • Nokhur Cemetery: Discover the unusual cemetery where the graves are traditionally decorated with mountain goat horns, reflecting local cultural beliefs.

  • Mountain Scenery: Enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding hills, narrow valleys and village landscapes.

  • Local Crafts and Heritage: Learn about the community's traditional skills and distinctive cultural identity.

Lunch in Nokhur or En Route

Enjoy a traditional lunch at a local family home or a suitable restaurant, according to the arrangements confirmed for your group.

This stop provides an opportunity to experience regional Turkmen hospitality and enjoy a relaxing break in the mountain environment.

Travel Note: Access to Nokhur depends on weather and road conditions. During heavy rain, snowfall or other adverse conditions, the itinerary may be adjusted for safety.

Kow Ata Underground Lake — A Unique Natural Experience

Continue toward Kow Ata Underground Lake, one of Turkmenistan's most unusual natural attractions.

Hidden deep inside a limestone cave, the lake is known for its naturally warm, mineral-rich water, traditionally described as approximately 35°C.

Descend into the cave using the established staircase and admire the remarkable underground environment.

Visitors may have the opportunity to swim or relax in the thermal waters when the facility is open and swimming is permitted.

Your guide will explain the practical arrangements and safety precautions before entering.

Visitor Information: The underground environment is warm and humid, and reaching the lake requires descending and later climbing a substantial number of steps. Swimming is optional and depends on individual comfort, health considerations and local access conditions.

Afternoon — Return to Ashgabat

After visiting Kow Ata, continue toward Ashgabat, approximately 100 km away, with an estimated driving time of around 1.5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.

Enjoy views of the Kopet Dag foothills before re-entering the capital.

Evening Dinner & Relaxation

Arrive in Ashgabat and settle into your hotel. Enjoy a relaxed dinner at a recommended local restaurant, followed by free time to rest before the final day's excursion to Ancient Merv.

Overnight: Hotel in Ashgabat.

Day 4 — Ashgabat → Ancient Merv → Ashgabat International Airport

Early Morning — Breakfast & Hotel Check-out

Begin the final day of your Turkmenistan adventure with breakfast at your hotel.

After checking out, meet your private guide and driver and prepare for a full-day excursion to the historic Merv oasis.

Highway Journey from Ashgabat to Mary

Depart Ashgabat and travel east along the main motorway toward Mary, covering approximately 360 km.

The drive generally takes around 3.5–4.5 hours, depending on traffic, weather and actual road conditions.

Along the way, observe the landscapes of southern Turkmenistan, from open plains to cultivated areas associated with the historic Murghab oasis.

Lunch in the Mary Region

Upon reaching Mary or Bayramaly, stop at a local restaurant for a traditional lunch.

Enjoy a comfortable break before continuing to one of Central Asia's most important archaeological sites.

Ancient Merv — UNESCO World Heritage Guided Tour

Explore Ancient Merv, an extraordinary archaeological landscape that preserves the remains of several historic cities associated with the legendary Silk Road.

Once a major commercial, intellectual and cultural centre, Merv played an important role in the development of Central Asia and reached particular prominence during the Great Seljuk period.

Your guided visit includes the principal monuments of the archaeological park:

Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar

Visit one of the most impressive surviving examples of Seljuk architecture, built in the 12th century for Sultan Ahmad Sanjar.

Admire its monumental proportions, characteristic brickwork and remarkable dome, reflecting the architectural achievements of medieval Merv.

Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala

Discover the famous mud-brick structures distinguished by their massive walls and unusual vertical corrugations.

These remarkable buildings are among the most recognisable monuments of Ancient Merv and offer fascinating insight into the oasis's early medieval architecture.

Askhabs Mausoleums

Explore the historic religious complex associated with companions of the Prophet Muhammad.

Learn about the site's significance within the spiritual and cultural history of the Merv oasis.

Ancient Sardoba & Historical Water Systems

Discover how water storage and management supported settlements and trade routes in this challenging environment.

Your guide will explain the importance of cisterns and other infrastructure to the historic oasis.

Erk Kala & Gyaur Kala

Explore the impressive remnants of two ancient fortified settlements.

Admire the surviving defensive walls and expansive archaeological landscape while learning how Merv developed through successive historical periods.

Additional Sightseeing: Other accessible monuments within Ancient Merv may be included if time permits. The exact sequence and number of stops will be adapted to the day's available time and local conditions.

Late Afternoon — Return Journey to Ashgabat

After completing the archaeological excursion, begin the return drive along the motorway toward Ashgabat.

The journey covers approximately 360 km and takes around four hours under normal driving conditions.

Relax in your private vehicle and enjoy views of the surrounding landscape on your final road journey through Turkmenistan.

Farewell Dinner in Ashgabat

If your flight departure time permits, enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant in the capital.

Reflect on the remarkable diversity of landscapes and cultural experiences discovered during your four-day journey, from the Caspian coast and Yangykala Canyon to the mountains of Nokhur and the ancient monuments of Merv.

Private Airport Transfer & Departure

Your Darvaza Tour team will arrange a private transfer to Ashgabat International Airport according to your confirmed international flight schedule, allowing appropriate time for check-in and departure procedures.

End of Tour Services.

Important: Day 4 involves a long round-trip drive and is best suited to a late-night or early-next-morning international flight. Exact sightseeing and transfer timing will be confirmed according to your departure schedule.

Accommodation

Ashgabat — 2 night

Ak Altyn Hotel 4*

Accommodation in Ashgabat is planned at Ak Altyn Hotel, a centrally located hotel with convenient access to the main sightseeing areas, restaurants and major city attractions.

The hotel is officially classified as a 4-star property, although it is an older-established hotel with a more traditional interior style compared with newer luxury hotels in Ashgabat. We use Ak Altyn because of its practical location, reliable service and easy access to the main places included in the city sightseeing programme.

Breakfast is included. Twin, double or single room arrangements can be provided according to the confirmed booking.

Balkan Region — 1 Night

One overnight stay is arranged at a suitable hotel in the Balkan Region, normally in Balkanabat or another convenient location along the route from Yangykala Canyon toward Nokhur.

Accommodation is selected with consideration for the following day's journey, providing a practical and comfortable place to rest after exploring the remote canyon landscapes.

Twin or double rooms will be arranged according to the confirmed booking, subject to local hotel availability.

Turkmenistan Visa Information

Turkmenistan now uses an electronic visa system for international travelers. For e-Visa applications, a separate traditional Letter of Invitation (LOI) is not required.

After your tour is confirmed, Darvaza Tour will assist you with the e-Visa application process. We will provide you with the list of required documents and information, help prepare the application and check the details before submission.

Once the application has been completed, it is submitted through the relevant migration procedure for consideration by the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan. The final decision on the e-Visa is made by the migration authorities.

After approval, the electronic visa will be provided before your trip. We recommend keeping both a digital and printed copy with your travel documents.

Visa-related requirements, processing procedures and applicable fees may be updated by the authorities. Darvaza Tour will provide the latest instructions before submission.

I had a wonderful experience travelling through Turkmenistan in my private tour. The whole trip was well organised from start to finish, and communication before the tour was always quick. My guide Aiza was perfect, she was like my best friend throughout the whole trip. And drivers were experienced. The drivers were very experienced and knew the routes well, so we always reached our destinations smoothly and without delays. In the future, I would love to come back to Turkmenistan with my friends for a longer trip and explore more of the country. I would also be happy to recommend Darvaza Tour to friends and anyone I know who is planning to visit Turkmenistan.

We had a fantastic 3 day tour of Darvaza Gas Crater and Ashgabat. I highly recommend the company who were very easy and accommodating to deal with from start to finish. We started planning this trip a year ago and the company gave plenty of help and advice before we agreed to use them. They made the visa process as simple as possible by asking once for our detailed information and then doing it on our behalf before sending us our LOIs. They adapted the itinerary to our preferences and booked accommodation that we wanted. Very quick replies by e-mail and were obliging with any questions I had about other aspects of Central Asia, such as currency. The guide (Ruslan) was extremely friendly and accommodating. It was clear that his main objective was to make sure that we had a good time and he did his very best to achieve this. His English was excellent and it made it very easy to understand what he was explaining to us and he was adaptable to do whatever we wanted. The 2 drivers were also very good who had specific local knowledge of the 2 locations and acted as an additional guide, for which Ruslan translated. Between the 3 of them, the itinerary was often adapted to make sure that we were making the best use of time and doing what we wanted. We were very happy with all 3 of them and it made a change from trips in other countries as it felt like a friend was showing us around his place rather than a formal guide. The border crossing at Shavat was slow (3 hours), so be prepared for that. Firstly we ate dinner at Bay Town restaurant in Dashoguz. This was upmarket and wouldn’t look out of place in Europe, but had cheap prices. Ruslan chatted to us here and asked our opinions on his plans. Before leaving the town we went to the supermarket to buy supplies for the camp site. This allowed us to pick food which we like to eat. Darvaza was obviously the highlight of the trip. Seeing it in the dark is amazing and I strongly recommend anyone going and seeing it, particularly before it slowly dies out. We were allowed as much time as we wanted there. Ruslan acted as a great photographer and adapted himself to the angles that we wanted. The dinner and morning afters breakfast was cooked at the camp site by the employees there using the food that we bought. The Yurt itself was spacious and comfortable, a great experience. It was not as cold as I expected in the desert overnight. It had 2 single beds and ample room to move around. There was a separate toilet block and no showers. We awoke early to see sunrise and the surroundings looked very different in the daylight. We left at 7:15am. In Ashgabat, firstly we had lunch at another very good restaurant with lots of tasty options at very good prices. I had chicken & pineapple curry and we shared a crispy eggplant salad. Then we went to the horse stables booked for 2pm. This was interesting to see the Turkmen horses and ride a horse. Afterwards we drove around and saw some buildings and went to the Turkmen museum. I commented that we were less interested in ancient history than modern history and then our guide & driver showed their adaptability again to take us to a different museum which had modern history including Russian occupation and the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake. This was interesting and a better museum in our opinions. We rode the Ferris wheel. This was great and we were given a souvenir fridge magnet too. The views were brilliant. We visited again after dark to see it lit up. After this we went to the bazaar to buy souvenirs. The stall was a recommendation from the driver and there were multiple good and cheap options. In the evening we had a drive around to see the lit up buildings. The driver was happy for us to stop and take photos. He knew good routes and avoided traffic to make the best use of time. We saw several monuments, the mall and Olympic village. We ate dinner in a modern shopping centre at a high quality French styled restaurant, frequented by Turkmens. This was very tasty food with local options and a good idea to see how local city life is like.

I would like to thank the DarvazaTour team for helping with all the nuances. What about the guide Mekan, at first I didn’t immediately understand what kind of person he was, but he turned out to be very kind and polite, helped me until the moment of departure and made me a delicious gift. And since lamb is very expensive in California, he decided to please me with lamb. A very attentive young man. I hope that I will still be able to visit this wonderful country and get to know the whole team in person.
