Tour Overview

The 3-Day Western Turkmenistan Tour from Ashgabat is designed for travelers who want to explore the country beyond the classic Ashgabat and Darvaza route. Travel west through Nokhur, visit Kow Ata, continue toward the Caspian region and experience the spectacular landscapes of Yangykala Canyon.

Discover a completely different side of Turkmenistan on this compact three-day journey through the country’s western landscapes. Starting and ending in Ashgabat, the route combines the capital, the Caspian coast, the dramatic cliffs of Yangykala Canyon, the mountain culture of Nokhur and the warm underground waters of Kow Ata. Begin with a private introduction to Ashgabat before flying west to Turkmenbashi on the Caspian Sea. From the coast, continue across the rugged desert landscapes of the Balkan region toward Yangykala Canyon, where red, pink and white limestone cliffs rise dramatically above the surrounding plateau.

The final day brings another change of scenery as the route turns east toward the Kopetdag Mountains. Visit Nokhur, one of Turkmenistan’s most distinctive mountain villages, learn about local traditions and continue to Kow Ata, a natural underground thermal lake hidden inside a vast limestone cave.

This itinerary is ideal for travellers who want to go beyond the classic Ashgabat–Darvaza route and experience western Turkmenistan’s canyon landscapes, mountain communities and Caspian scenery within a short private tour.

3-Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrival in Ashgabat & Private City Tour

Your journey begins at Ashgabat International Airport, where you complete passport, immigration and customs formalities before meeting your local guide and driver in the arrivals area.

Depending on your flight schedule, transfer first to a local restaurant for breakfast or refreshments before starting the sightseeing programme.

Spend the day discovering Ashgabat at a comfortable pace. The capital is known for its monumental white-marble architecture, broad avenues, landscaped parks and modern national landmarks. Your guide will create a flexible route according to your interests, available time and local access.

The sightseeing programme can include major monuments, cultural sites, panoramic viewpoints, mosques, markets or museums, with the exact sequence adjusted to suit your arrival schedule.

Lunch and dinner are arranged at local restaurants, allowing you to sample Turkmen and regional cuisine while enjoying a relaxed first day in the country.

Overnight: Ak Altyn Hotel, Ashgabat.

Day 2 — Ashgabat → Turkmenbashi by Flight → Yangykala Canyon → Balkan Region

After an early breakfast and check-out, transfer to Ashgabat International Airport for the morning domestic flight to Turkmenbashi on the Caspian coast.

On arrival, meet your local driver and begin with a short orientation around Turkmenbashi. See some of the city’s older architecture, the historic railway station and selected coastal views of the Caspian Sea.

If conditions and access permit, a short visit toward the Awaza resort area can also be considered. Access to the resort zone depends on the regulations and local conditions in place on the day of travel.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before leaving the coast and continuing east into the open desert.

Depending on timing, road conditions and local access, an optional stop can be made at Gozli Ata, one of western Turkmenistan’s important pilgrimage sites surrounded by striking desert and cliff scenery.

Continue toward Yangykala Canyon, approximately 160 km from Turkmenbashi. The final sections of the journey follow rough and unpaved tracks, adding to the expedition-style character of the day.

Arrive at the canyon plateau and explore the remarkable layers of red, rose, orange and white rock formations carved across the ancient landscape. There will be time for panoramic viewpoints, photography and a walk around the plateau.

Depending on season and weather, dinner may be arranged as a picnic in the canyon area or later at the hotel.

After sunset, continue toward the nearest suitable hotel in the Balkan region.

Overnight: Hotel in Balkanabat or another suitable Balkan-region transit location, subject to availability.

Day 3 — Balkan Region → Nokhur → Kow Ata → Ashgabat Airport

After breakfast, leave the Balkan region and begin the journey east, travelling along the foothills of the Kopetdag Mountains.

Turn into the mountains toward Nokhur, one of the country’s most distinctive traditional villages. The road gradually climbs through scenic mountain landscapes before reaching the settlement.

Explore Nokhur with your guide and learn about the local community’s traditions and cultural identity. Visit the well-known village cemetery, where gravestones are decorated with mountain-goat horns, and see selected local religious and cultural sites.

Enjoy a traditional lunch in the village at a local home, guesthouse or restaurant depending on arrangements and availability.

After lunch, descend from the mountains and continue toward Kow Ata.

Kow Ata is a vast natural limestone cave containing a warm underground lake. Descend into the cavern and, if you wish, swim in the mineral-rich thermal water, which remains naturally warm throughout the year.

After the visit, continue approximately 100 km toward Ashgabat.

Depending on your international flight schedule, enjoy a farewell dinner in the capital before the final private transfer to Ashgabat International Airport.

The airport transfer will be coordinated with your confirmed departure time and airline requirements.

Accommodation

Ashgabat — 1 night

Ak Altyn Hotel 4*

Accommodation in Ashgabat is planned at Ak Altyn Hotel, a centrally located hotel with convenient access to the main sightseeing areas, restaurants and major city attractions.

The hotel is officially classified as a 4-star property, although it is an older-established hotel with a more traditional interior style compared with newer luxury hotels in Ashgabat. We use Ak Altyn because of its practical location, reliable service and easy access to the main places included in the city sightseeing programme.

Breakfast is included. Twin, double or single room arrangements can be provided according to the confirmed booking.

Balkan Region — 1 night

Accommodation on the second night will be arranged at the best suitable hotel available in the Balkan region, normally in Balkanabat or another practical transit location depending on the confirmed route and room availability.
The overnight stop is selected primarily for convenient access between Yangykala Canyon and the following day’s route toward Nokhur and Ashgabat.
Rooms will be arranged on the best available standard for the confirmed travel date, with breakfast included where available.

Turkmenistan Visa Information

Turkmenistan now uses an electronic visa system for international travelers. For e-Visa applications, a separate traditional Letter of Invitation (LOI) is not required.

After your tour is confirmed, Darvaza Tour will assist you with the e-Visa application process. We will provide you with the list of required documents and information, help prepare the application and check the details before submission.

Once the application has been completed, it is submitted through the relevant migration procedure for consideration by the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan. The final decision on the e-Visa is made by the migration authorities.

After approval, the electronic visa will be provided before your trip. We recommend keeping both a digital and printed copy with your travel documents.

Visa-related requirements, processing procedures and applicable fees may be updated by the authorities. Darvaza Tour will provide the latest instructions before submission.

Thank you Gozel for all your assistance up til the start of the tour, with putting together our applications for the LoI and any questions I had about the trip to Turkmenistan! Thank you to Agamyrat as well for being a great friendly guide and giving very helpful explanations, and to the driver as well (sorry didnt get his name!) for his experience and expertise in navigating difficult roads in record time.

We saw it exactly in the way he sees it, and would love to visit again! If you were to book anyone to show you this amazing country, it would be Mekan.

I had a wonderful experience travelling through Turkmenistan in my private tour. The whole trip was well organised from start to finish, and communication before the tour was always quick. My guide Aiza was perfect, she was like my best friend throughout the whole trip. And drivers were experienced. The drivers were very experienced and knew the routes well, so we always reached our destinations smoothly and without delays. In the future, I would love to come back to Turkmenistan with my friends for a longer trip and explore more of the country. I would also be happy to recommend Darvaza Tour to friends and anyone I know who is planning to visit Turkmenistan.

We had a fantastic 3 day tour of Darvaza Gas Crater and Ashgabat. I highly recommend the company who were very easy and accommodating to deal with from start to finish. We started planning this trip a year ago and the company gave plenty of help and advice before we agreed to use them. They made the visa process as simple as possible by asking once for our detailed information and then doing it on our behalf before sending us our LOIs. They adapted the itinerary to our preferences and booked accommodation that we wanted. Very quick replies by e-mail and were obliging with any questions I had about other aspects of Central Asia, such as currency. The guide (Ruslan) was extremely friendly and accommodating. It was clear that his main objective was to make sure that we had a good time and he did his very best to achieve this. His English was excellent and it made it very easy to understand what he was explaining to us and he was adaptable to do whatever we wanted. The 2 drivers were also very good who had specific local knowledge of the 2 locations and acted as an additional guide, for which Ruslan translated. Between the 3 of them, the itinerary was often adapted to make sure that we were making the best use of time and doing what we wanted. We were very happy with all 3 of them and it made a change from trips in other countries as it felt like a friend was showing us around his place rather than a formal guide. The border crossing at Shavat was slow (3 hours), so be prepared for that. Firstly we ate dinner at Bay Town restaurant in Dashoguz. This was upmarket and wouldn’t look out of place in Europe, but had cheap prices. Ruslan chatted to us here and asked our opinions on his plans. Before leaving the town we went to the supermarket to buy supplies for the camp site. This allowed us to pick food which we like to eat. Darvaza was obviously the highlight of the trip. Seeing it in the dark is amazing and I strongly recommend anyone going and seeing it, particularly before it slowly dies out. We were allowed as much time as we wanted there. Ruslan acted as a great photographer and adapted himself to the angles that we wanted. The dinner and morning afters breakfast was cooked at the camp site by the employees there using the food that we bought. The Yurt itself was spacious and comfortable, a great experience. It was not as cold as I expected in the desert overnight. It had 2 single beds and ample room to move around. There was a separate toilet block and no showers. We awoke early to see sunrise and the surroundings looked very different in the daylight. We left at 7:15am. In Ashgabat, firstly we had lunch at another very good restaurant with lots of tasty options at very good prices. I had chicken & pineapple curry and we shared a crispy eggplant salad. Then we went to the horse stables booked for 2pm. This was interesting to see the Turkmen horses and ride a horse. Afterwards we drove around and saw some buildings and went to the Turkmen museum. I commented that we were less interested in ancient history than modern history and then our guide & driver showed their adaptability again to take us to a different museum which had modern history including Russian occupation and the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake. This was interesting and a better museum in our opinions. We rode the Ferris wheel. This was great and we were given a souvenir fridge magnet too. The views were brilliant. We visited again after dark to see it lit up. After this we went to the bazaar to buy souvenirs. The stall was a recommendation from the driver and there were multiple good and cheap options. In the evening we had a drive around to see the lit up buildings. The driver was happy for us to stop and take photos. He knew good routes and avoided traffic to make the best use of time. We saw several monuments, the mall and Olympic village. We ate dinner in a modern shopping centre at a high quality French styled restaurant, frequented by Turkmens. This was very tasty food with local options and a good idea to see how local city life is like.

I would like to thank the DarvazaTour team for helping with all the nuances. What about the guide Mekan, at first I didn’t immediately understand what kind of person he was, but he turned out to be very kind and polite, helped me until the moment of departure and made me a delicious gift. And since lamb is very expensive in California, he decided to please me with lamb. A very attentive young man. I hope that I will still be able to visit this wonderful country and get to know the whole team in person.
