4-Day Turkmenistan Tour from Bukhara to Khiva via Merv, Overnight Train & Darvaza

4-Day

Private / Small Group

This 4-Day Turkmenistan Tour from Bukhara to Khiva combines Ancient Merv, an overnight sleeper train, Ashgabat, the Darvaza Gas Crater and Kunya-Urgench in one overland journey across Turkmenistan.

Tour Overview

The 4-Day Turkmenistan Tour from Bukhara to Khiva is designed for travelers crossing Turkmenistan from east to west. Enter through the Farap border near Bukhara, explore Ancient Merv, travel overnight by sleeper train, discover Ashgabat, visit the Darvaza Gas Crater and continue through Kunya-Urgench before exiting toward Khiva.

The route begins at the Farap border and immediately introduces you to the historical heart of the country with a visit to Ancient Merv, one of Central Asia's most important Silk Road sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After exploring the archaeological park, continue to Mary and board a domestic overnight sleeper train to Ashgabat. The following morning, arrive in the capital and spend a full day discovering Ashgabat's monumental white-marble architecture, broad avenues, cultural landmarks and local city life with a private guide.

On Day 3, leave the capital and travel north into the Karakum Desert. Stop at the Water and Mud craters before reaching the Darvaza Gas Crater in time for sunset. Spend the evening beside the flames, enjoy dinner at the camp and stay overnight in a traditional Turkmen yurt. The final day continues north toward Kunya-Urgench, one of Turkmenistan's major UNESCO-listed historical sites. Explore its medieval minarets and mausoleums before choosing the border crossing that best fits your onward route in Uzbekistan: Shavat for Khiva or Urgench, or Khojeyli for Nukus and the Aral Sea region.

This itinerary is ideal for travellers who want to cross Turkmenistan overland while experiencing Ancient Merv, Ashgabat, Darvaza and Kunya-Urgench within a compact four-day programme.

4-Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1 — Farap Border → Ancient Merv → Mary → Overnight Train to Ashgabat

Your journey begins at the Farap border crossing, the main land entry point for travellers arriving from Bukhara.

The planned meeting time on the Turkmenistan side is approximately 09:00. After passport and immigration procedures are completed, meet your local guide and driver in the permitted border area.

From Farap, travel west toward the Merv oasis and the Mary region.

Stop for lunch before beginning your guided exploration of Ancient Merv, one of the great historical centres of the Silk Road and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The sightseeing programme includes the principal monuments of the archaeological park.

  • Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar — one of the most important surviving monuments of the Seljuk period.
  • Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala — monumental mud-brick structures known for their distinctive corrugated walls.
  • Askhabs Mausoleums — sacred Islamic monuments associated with early Muslim history.
  • Ancient Sardoba and water structures — examples of how water was collected and stored in the desert environment.
  • Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala — major fortified areas representing earlier stages in the development of the Merv settlement complex.

Where time permits, additional ruins can be included according to your interests.

After the tour, continue to Mary city.

Take time for dinner or purchase food and drinks for the overnight train journey.

Later in the evening, transfer to Mary Railway Station and board the sleeper train to Ashgabat.

The planned departure time is approximately 21:25, subject to the railway timetable confirmed for your travel date.

Overnight: Sleeper train, Mary → Ashgabat.
Included meals: According to the confirmed package.

Day 2 — Ashgabat Full-Day City Tour

Arrive at Ashgabat Railway Station in the morning, with the planned arrival around 08:05, subject to the confirmed railway schedule.

Meet your driver at the station and transfer for breakfast before beginning the day's programme.

Spend the day exploring Turkmenistan's capital with your private local guide.

Ashgabat is known for its distinctive white-marble architecture, wide boulevards, monumental public spaces and impressive city landmarks.

The sightseeing route is flexible and can be adapted to your interests and the time available.

Possible visits may include major monuments, mosques, museums, viewpoints, landscaped parks, public squares and local markets.

Take lunch and dinner breaks at local restaurants during the day.

In the evening, transfer to your hotel and check in.

Overnight: Ak Altyn Hotel, Ashgabat.
Included meals: Breakfast.

Day 3 — Ashgabat → Water & Mud Craters → Darvaza Gas Crater

After breakfast, check out of the hotel and enjoy some additional free time or sightseeing in Ashgabat.

Depending on your interests, you can use the morning to visit places not seen the previous day, shop for souvenirs or stop at a local market before leaving the city.

After lunch, depart Ashgabat and travel north into the Karakum Desert.

The route to Darvaza covers approximately 270 km and normally takes around 3.5 hours, although rough desert-road sections may extend the journey.

Along the way, stop at the Water Crater and Mud Crater, two unusual geological features in the Darvaza region.

Continue deeper into the desert and arrive at the Darvaza Gas Crater toward sunset.

As the sky darkens, the crater's flames become more vivid and create one of the most dramatic night-time landscapes in Turkmenistan.

At the nearby yurt camp, enjoy a freshly prepared outdoor barbecue dinner.

After dinner, spend additional time near the crater for night-time viewing and photography.

Overnight: Traditional Turkmen yurt camp near Darvaza Gas Crater.
Included meals: Breakfast and dinner.

Day 4 — Darvaza → Kunya-Urgench → Shavat Border or Khojeyli Border

Guests who wake early can make an optional pre-sunrise visit to the crater for another view of the landscape.

Return to the camp for breakfast before beginning the journey north toward Kunya-Urgench.

The planned drive is approximately 390 km, with an estimated journey time of around 5.5 hours depending on road conditions.

Upon arrival, take a lunch break and begin your guided exploration of Kunya-Urgench, one of Turkmenistan's most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The historical programme includes:

  • Kutlug-Timur Minaret — one of the most impressive surviving medieval minarets in Central Asia.
  • Turabek-Khanum Mausoleum — famous for its exceptional interior decoration and geometric dome design.
  • Sultan Tekesh Mausoleum — an important Khorezmshah-era monument with a distinctive conical roof.
  • Il-Arslan Mausoleum — another significant medieval structure associated with the rulers of Khorezm.
  • Caravanserai Gate — a surviving portal connected with the city's former importance on Silk Road trade routes.

After sightseeing, continue toward your selected border crossing.

After your tour is confirmed, Darvaza Tour will assist you with the e-Visa application process. We will provide you with the list of required documents and information, help prepare the application and check the details before submission.

After approval, the electronic visa will be provided before your trip. We recommend keeping both a digital and printed copy with your travel documents.

Visa-related requirements, processing procedures and applicable fees may be updated by the authorities. Darvaza Tour will provide the latest instructions before submission.

Thank you Gozel for all your assistance up til the start of the tour, with putting together our applications for the LoI and any questions I had about the trip to Turkmenistan! Thank you to Agamyrat as well for being a great friendly guide and giving very helpful explanations, and to the driver as well (sorry didnt get his name!) for his experience and expertise in navigating difficult roads in record time.

I had a wonderful experience travelling through Turkmenistan in my private tour. The whole trip was well organised from start to finish, and communication before the tour was always quick. My guide Aiza was perfect, she was like my best friend throughout the whole trip. And drivers were experienced. The drivers were very experienced and knew the routes well, so we always reached our destinations smoothly and without delays. In the future, I would love to come back to Turkmenistan with my friends for a longer trip and explore more of the country. I would also be happy to recommend Darvaza Tour to friends and anyone I know who is planning to visit Turkmenistan.

We had a fantastic 3 day tour of Darvaza Gas Crater and Ashgabat. I highly recommend the company who were very easy and accommodating to deal with from start to finish. We started planning this trip a year ago and the company gave plenty of help and advice before we agreed to use them. They made the visa process as simple as possible by asking once for our detailed information and then doing it on our behalf before sending us our LOIs. They adapted the itinerary to our preferences and booked accommodation that we wanted. Very quick replies by e-mail and were obliging with any questions I had about other aspects of Central Asia, such as currency. The guide (Ruslan) was extremely friendly and accommodating. It was clear that his main objective was to make sure that we had a good time and he did his very best to achieve this. His English was excellent and it made it very easy to understand what he was explaining to us and he was adaptable to do whatever we wanted. The 2 drivers were also very good who had specific local knowledge of the 2 locations and acted as an additional guide, for which Ruslan translated. Between the 3 of them, the itinerary was often adapted to make sure that we were making the best use of time and doing what we wanted. We were very happy with all 3 of them and it made a change from trips in other countries as it felt like a friend was showing us around his place rather than a formal guide. The border crossing at Shavat was slow (3 hours), so be prepared for that. Firstly we ate dinner at Bay Town restaurant in Dashoguz. This was upmarket and wouldn’t look out of place in Europe, but had cheap prices. Ruslan chatted to us here and asked our opinions on his plans. Before leaving the town we went to the supermarket to buy supplies for the camp site. This allowed us to pick food which we like to eat. Darvaza was obviously the highlight of the trip. Seeing it in the dark is amazing and I strongly recommend anyone going and seeing it, particularly before it slowly dies out. We were allowed as much time as we wanted there. Ruslan acted as a great photographer and adapted himself to the angles that we wanted. The dinner and morning afters breakfast was cooked at the camp site by the employees there using the food that we bought. The Yurt itself was spacious and comfortable, a great experience. It was not as cold as I expected in the desert overnight. It had 2 single beds and ample room to move around. There was a separate toilet block and no showers. We awoke early to see sunrise and the surroundings looked very different in the daylight. We left at 7:15am. In Ashgabat, firstly we had lunch at another very good restaurant with lots of tasty options at very good prices. I had chicken & pineapple curry and we shared a crispy eggplant salad. Then we went to the horse stables booked for 2pm. This was interesting to see the Turkmen horses and ride a horse. Afterwards we drove around and saw some buildings and went to the Turkmen museum. I commented that we were less interested in ancient history than modern history and then our guide & driver showed their adaptability again to take us to a different museum which had modern history including Russian occupation and the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake. This was interesting and a better museum in our opinions. We rode the Ferris wheel. This was great and we were given a souvenir fridge magnet too. The views were brilliant. We visited again after dark to see it lit up. After this we went to the bazaar to buy souvenirs. The stall was a recommendation from the driver and there were multiple good and cheap options. In the evening we had a drive around to see the lit up buildings. The driver was happy for us to stop and take photos. He knew good routes and avoided traffic to make the best use of time. We saw several monuments, the mall and Olympic village. We ate dinner in a modern shopping centre at a high quality French styled restaurant, frequented by Turkmens. This was very tasty food with local options and a good idea to see how local city life is like.

I would like to thank the DarvazaTour team for helping with all the nuances. What about the guide Mekan, at first I didn’t immediately understand what kind of person he was, but he turned out to be very kind and polite, helped me until the moment of departure and made me a delicious gift. And since lamb is very expensive in California, he decided to please me with lamb. A very attentive young man. I hope that I will still be able to visit this wonderful country and get to know the whole team in person.
