4 Day Turkmenistan Tour is a compact private journey across Turkmenistan from the Farab border to the Shavat border, combining the country’s most important historical, cultural, and desert highlights. Begin with the ancient Silk Road city of Merv before continuing to Ashgabat to explore its white-marble architecture, museums, monuments, Old Nisa and other major sights. The journey then crosses the Karakum Desert to the famous Darvaza Gas Crater, where you can watch the flames after sunset and spend the night in a traditional yurt camp. On the final day, travel north through Dashoguz and continue to the Shavat border for your onward journey to Uzbekistan. This four-day route is ideal for travelers who want to experience Merv, Ashgabat and Darvaza in one efficient overland trip.

4 Day Turkmenistan Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Farab Border – Merv – Mary

Cross the Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan border at the Farab checkpoint, where your Turkmen guide and driver will meet you after border formalities.

Continue toward Ancient Merv, one of the most important historical cities along the Silk Road. Spend the day exploring the archaeological sites and monuments of this vast ancient settlement.

During the Merv tour, visit:

  • Gyz Gala fortress
  • Askhab mausoleums
  • Gyaur Kala
  • Erk Kala
  • Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar
  • Other important historical sites within Ancient Merv

After sightseeing, continue to Mary, the regional capital located near Merv.

Day 2: Mary – Ashgabat

After breakfast, depart Mary and drive to Ashgabat, approximately 388 km away.

Upon arrival, begin your sightseeing tour of Turkmenistan’s capital. Ashgabat is known for its distinctive white marble architecture, broad avenues, monuments and museums.

Depending on opening hours and available time, the sightseeing program can include:

  • National Museum
  • Carpet Museum
  • Major monuments and squares of Ashgabat
  • Old Nisa, the historic Parthian site
  • Akhal-Teke horse farm
  • Other important city attractions

The itinerary can be adjusted according to museum opening hours and your interests.

Day 3: Ashgabat – Darvaza Gas Crater

Enjoy some free time in Ashgabat in the morning before departing for the Darvaza Gas Crater in the afternoon.

Travel approximately 271 km north through the Karakum Desert toward Darvaza. The drive normally takes around 4-5 hours depending on road and local conditions.

Upon arrival, explore the famous Darvaza Gas Crater, also known as the Door to Hell. The crater becomes especially impressive after sunset when the flames illuminate the surrounding desert.

Dinner will be served at the nearby yurt camp.

Spend the evening enjoying the desert atmosphere before staying overnight in a traditional yurt or tent.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Amazing Turkmenistan tour!

Our guide was incredibly kind and flexible, even taking us around Ashgabat to show us the important buildings and explain them. They constantly offered us water in the heat, and the border transfers were very reassuring. Thanks to them, we shopped at the market, saw more places than expected, and safely visited the Darvaza Crater.

The food at the restaurants and yurt was delicious, and the cooking experience and traditional dance were unforgettable!

One minor tip for improvement: Since there was so much to see, the schedule ran a bit late. Starting a little earlier or tightening the timing would make it even better.

I’d love to come back next time with my family and friends!
