Day 1: Bukhara / Farab Border – Turkmenabat – Ancient Merv – Ashgabat

After the border formalities are completed, begin the drive through eastern Turkmenistan. Depending on your arrival time, the guide can arrange a stop for lunch in Turkmenabat or later along the route.

Continue west toward the historical Merv Oasis, one of the most important archaeological regions in Turkmenistan and a major stop on the ancient Silk Road.

Upon arrival, begin a guided exploration of Ancient Merv, a vast archaeological area containing remains from several different historical periods.

Main sights normally include:

Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar – one of the most recognizable monuments of medieval Merv.
Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala – distinctive ancient mud-brick fortresses with massive corrugated walls.
Erk Kala – one of the oldest parts of ancient Merv.

The exact sightseeing order can be adjusted according to opening hours and the time available before departure for Darvaza.
