4 Day Turkmenistan Tour from Bukhara is a compact private journey designed for travelers entering Turkmenistan from Uzbekistan through the Farab border and finishing their trip at Ashgabat International Airport. In just four days, the route combines some of Turkmenistan’s most important historical, cultural and desert highlights, including Ancient Merv, Ashgabat, Old Nisa and the famous Darvaza Gas Crater. After crossing the border, travel through eastern Turkmenistan to the UNESCO-listed archaeological site of Ancient Merv, once one of the great cities of the Silk Road. Continue to Ashgabat to discover the capital’s white-marble architecture, monuments, museums and historical surroundings before heading north across the Karakum Desert. The highlight of the journey is an evening at the Darvaza Gas Crater, where you can watch the flames become especially impressive after sunset, enjoy dinner near the crater and spend the night in a traditional yurt camp. The following day, return to Ashgabat for additional sightseeing, local markets and free time before your final airport transfer. This route is especially convenient for travelers combining Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan who want to enter overland from the Bukhara side but depart internationally from Ashgabat instead of returning to Uzbekistan.

4 Day Turkmenistan Tour from Bukhara Itinerary

Day 1: Bukhara / Farab Border – Turkmenabat – Ancient Merv – Ashgabat

Your 4 Day Turkmenistan Tour from Bukhara begins with the journey from Bukhara toward the Uzbekistan–Turkmenistan border. After completing the Uzbek departure procedures, cross the border and meet your local Turkmen guide and driver on the Turkmenistan side.

After the border formalities are completed, begin the drive through eastern Turkmenistan. Depending on your arrival time, the guide can arrange a stop for lunch in Turkmenabat or later along the route.

Continue west toward the historical Merv Oasis, one of the most important archaeological regions in Turkmenistan and a major stop on the ancient Silk Road.

Upon arrival, begin a guided exploration of Ancient Merv, a vast archaeological area containing remains from several different historical periods.

Main sights normally include:

  • Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar – one of the most recognizable monuments of medieval Merv.
  • Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala – distinctive ancient mud-brick fortresses with massive corrugated walls.
  • Erk Kala – one of the oldest parts of ancient Merv.
  • Gyaur Kala – the remains of another major fortified settlement.
  • Askhab Mausoleums – an important religious and historical site.
  • Additional ruins and archaeological structures depending on available time.

Because Ancient Merv is a very large archaeological complex, the sightseeing program can be adjusted according to your border-crossing time and interests.

After visiting Merv, continue west toward Ashgabat. The evening drive gives you time to relax after a long but rewarding first day.

Upon arrival in the capital, transfer directly to your hotel and check in.

Overnight: Ashgabat hotel

Day 2: Ashgabat Sightseeing – Darvaza Gas Crater

After breakfast, begin sightseeing in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan’s modern capital, known for its monumental architecture, broad avenues and distinctive white marble buildings.

The exact sightseeing order can be adjusted according to opening hours and the time available before departure for Darvaza.

Possible highlights include:

  • Gypjak Mosque and Mausoleum
  • Old Nisa, the historical Parthian site outside Ashgabat
  • Major monuments and government districts
  • Panoramic viewpoints over the city
  • Local museums depending on your interests and opening schedules
  • Akhal-Teke horse facilities, when included and available
  • Other important Ashgabat landmarks selected together with your guide

Around midday, stop for lunch at a local restaurant and experience Turkmen cuisine.

Later in the afternoon, leave Ashgabat and begin the journey north through the Karakum Desert toward the Darvaza Gas Crater.

As the city disappears behind you, the landscape gradually changes into wide open desert scenery. Your guide can arrange short stops along the road whenever appropriate.

Arrive at Darvaza Gas Crater in the late afternoon or early evening. If timing allows, you will first see the crater in daylight and then watch the atmosphere change as darkness falls and the flames become much more visible.

You will have time to walk around the safe viewing area, take photographs and experience one of Turkmenistan’s most unusual landscapes.

Dinner is served near the crater or at the yurt camp. A typical evening meal may include freshly prepared local dishes and shashlyk.

After dinner, enjoy more time near the crater before returning to the nearby camp.

Overnight: Private or traditional yurt near Darvaza Gas Crater

Day 3: Darvaza Gas Crater – Ashgabat – Markets & City Life

Wake up in the Karakum Desert and enjoy breakfast at the camp.

Travelers who wake early can experience the quiet desert atmosphere around sunrise before departing Darvaza.

After breakfast, begin the return drive south toward Ashgabat.

Upon arrival, have lunch in the city and continue with a more relaxed afternoon program focused on everyday life, shopping and places that may not have been covered during the previous day.

Depending on the day of the week, your interests and available time, the program may include:

  • Tolkuchka Bazaar or another traditional market
  • Russian Bazaar
  • Local souvenir shops
  • Carpet and handicraft shopping
  • Berkarar Shopping and Entertainment Center
  • Additional Ashgabat monuments or viewpoints
  • Free time for personal shopping, cafés or independent exploration

This day is deliberately kept more flexible. If there was not enough time to visit a particular Ashgabat sight on Day 2, it can often be added here.

In the evening, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant before returning to your hotel.

Overnight: Ashgabat hotel

Day 4: Ashgabat – Airport Departure

Your final day is arranged according to your international flight schedule.

Our driver will collect you from your hotel and provide a private transfer to Ashgabat International Airport with sufficient time for check-in and departure procedures.

If your flight leaves later in the day and time allows, additional sightseeing, shopping or restaurant arrangements can be organized before the airport transfer.

Your 4 Day Turkmenistan Tour from Bukhara ends at Ashgabat International Airport.
