4-Day Turkmenistan Tour from Bukhara to Khiva via Merv, Ashgabat, Darvaza & Kunya-Urgench

4-Day

Private / Small Group

This 4-Day Turkmenistan Tour from Bukhara to Khiva combines Ancient Merv, Ashgabat, the Darvaza Gas Crater and UNESCO-listed Kunya-Urgench in one overland journey across Turkmenistan.

Two Japanese tourists watching the natural gas flames burning across the rocky interior of Darvaza Gas Crater in Turkmenistan at night.

Tour Overview

The 4-Day Turkmenistan Tour from Bukhara to Khiva is designed for travelers crossing Turkmenistan from east to west. Enter through the Farap border near Bukhara, explore Ancient Merv and Ashgabat, spend the night near the Darvaza Gas Crater and continue through Kunya-Urgench before exiting toward Khiva. Your first day is dedicated to Ancient Merv, one of the most important archaeological landscapes on the Silk Road and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before continuing to Ashgabat for the night.

Day 2 offers a full private exploration of the capital. Discover Ashgabat's monumental white-marble architecture, ceremonial boulevards, cultural landmarks and distinctive cityscape at a relaxed pace with your local guide.

On Day 3, continue sightseeing in Ashgabat before travelling north into the Karakum Desert. Stop at the Water and Mud craters and reach the Darvaza Gas Crater by sunset. Spend the evening beside the flames, enjoy dinner at the desert camp and stay overnight in a traditional Turkmen yurt. The final day continues north to Kunya-Urgench, another UNESCO-listed historical centre filled with medieval minarets, mausoleums and Silk Road monuments. From there, choose the border crossing that best suits your onward journey in Uzbekistan: Shavat for Khiva and Urgench, or Hojaili for Nukus and the Aral Sea region.

This itinerary is ideal for travellers who want to cross Turkmenistan overland while combining its most important historical, cultural and desert highlights within a well-balanced four-day programme.

4-Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1 — Farap Border → Turkmenabat → Ancient Merv → Ashgabat

Your Turkmenistan journey begins at the Farap border crossing, the main land entry point for travellers arriving from Bukhara.

The planned meeting time on the Turkmenistan side is approximately 09:00. After you complete passport and immigration formalities, our local team will coordinate your meeting with the guide inside the permitted border area.

From Farap, take a short drive toward Turkmenabat, approximately 40 km away.

Stop for an early lunch at a local restaurant before beginning the journey southwest toward the Merv oasis.

Continue along the main Turkmenabat–Mary motorway. The planned distance is approximately 240 km, with an estimated driving time of around 2.5 hours under normal conditions.

Upon arrival in the Merv region, begin your guided visit to Ancient Merv, one of the great historical centres of Central Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The tour includes the principal monuments of the archaeological park.

  • Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar — one of the finest surviving monuments of the Seljuk period and a defining landmark of Ancient Merv.
  • Greater and Lesser Kyz Kala — monumental mud-brick structures known for their unusual corrugated exterior walls.
  • Askhabs Mausoleums — sacred monuments associated with early Islamic history.
  • Ancient Sardoba and water-storage structures — examples of the systems used to preserve water in the desert environment.
  • Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala — ancient fortified areas illustrating the long history and scale of the Merv settlement complex.

Where time allows, additional ruins within the archaeological park can be visited according to your interests.

After the Merv programme, continue west toward Ashgabat.

The road from the Mary region to the capital covers approximately 360 km and usually takes around 3.5 to 4 hours.

Dinner can be arranged either before departure from Mary or at a suitable restaurant stop along the highway, depending on timing and your preference.

Arrive in Ashgabat in the late evening and transfer directly to your hotel for check-in and rest.

Overnight: Ak Altyn Hotel, Ashgabat.
Included meals: According to the confirmed package.

Day 2 — Full-Day Ashgabat City Tour

After breakfast at the hotel, begin a full day of private sightseeing in Ashgabat.

This day is designed to give you a broad introduction to Turkmenistan's capital at a comfortable pace.

Ashgabat is known for its monumental white-marble architecture, wide avenues, landscaped parks, striking public buildings and distinctive city planning.

Your guide will create a flexible sightseeing programme based on your interests, access conditions and the time available.

Possible highlights may include major monuments, mosques, museums, viewpoints, ceremonial squares, parks and local markets.

The day can combine modern architecture with elements of Turkmenistan's history and culture, allowing you to see both the official city landmarks and more everyday parts of the capital.

Take lunch and dinner breaks at local restaurants during the day.

In the evening, return to your hotel and relax after the full-day programme.

Overnight: Ak Altyn Hotel, Ashgabat.
Included meals: Breakfast.

Day 3 — Ashgabat → Water Crater → Mud Crater → Darvaza Gas Crater

After breakfast, continue your exploration of Ashgabat during the morning.

This additional sightseeing period can be used to visit important places that were not included on the previous day, allowing the programme to remain flexible and tailored to your interests.

Take a relaxed lunch break before leaving the capital.

In the afternoon, depart Ashgabat and travel north into the Karakum Desert.

The planned distance to Darvaza is approximately 270 km, with an estimated driving time of around 3.5 hours.

Some sections of the desert road are rough and uneven, so travel time may vary.

Along the route, stop at the Water Crater and Mud Crater, two unusual geological sites in the Darvaza region.

Continue deeper into the Karakum and arrive at the Darvaza Gas Crater toward sunset.

As darkness falls, the flames inside the crater become much more dramatic against the surrounding desert.

At the nearby camp, enjoy a freshly prepared open-air barbecue dinner.

After dinner, spend additional time near the crater for night-time viewing and photography under the desert sky.

Overnight: Traditional Turkmen yurt camp near Darvaza Gas Crater.
Included meals: Breakfast and dinner.

Day 4 — Darvaza → Kunya-Urgench → Shavat Border or Hojaili Border

Guests who wish to wake early can make an optional return to the crater before sunrise for one last view of the landscape.

After breakfast at the camp, begin the northbound journey across the Karakum Desert toward Kunya-Urgench.

The planned drive is approximately 260 km, with an estimated travel time of around 3.5 to 4 hours depending on road conditions.

Upon arrival in Kunya-Urgench, stop for lunch at a local restaurant before beginning the historical programme.

Kunya-Urgench was one of the major political and commercial centres of the Khorezm region and today forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Main highlights include:

  • Kutlug-Timur Minaret — one of the tallest and most impressive surviving medieval minarets in Central Asia.
  • Turabek-Khanum Mausoleum — renowned for its exceptional interior dome decoration and geometric mosaic design.
  • Sultan Tekesh Mausoleum — an important Khorezmshah-era monument with a distinctive conical roof.
  • Il-Arslan Mausoleum — another significant example of medieval Khorezm architecture.
  • Caravanserai Gate — a surviving monument connected with the city's role in historic Silk Road trade.

After sightseeing, continue toward the border crossing best suited to your onward route in Uzbekistan.

Option A — Shavat Border for Khiva / Urgench

Travel south via the Dashoguz region toward the Shavat border crossing.

This is the most convenient option for travellers continuing to Khiva or Urgench.

Option B — Hojaili Border for Nukus / Muynak

Continue toward the Hojaili crossing for travellers heading toward Nukus, Muynak or the Aral Sea region.

Our local team will assist with Turkmenistan departure procedures within the areas permitted by border regulations.

The tour ends on the Turkmenistan side of the selected crossing.

Overnight: None.
Included meals: Breakfast.

Accommodation

Darvaza — 1 night

Traditional Turkmen Yurt Camp

One night near the Darvaza Gas Crater. The stay includes bedding, dinner, breakfast and access to camp washing/shower facilities. Accommodation in the desert is simpler than a city hotel and is designed as part of the Karakum experience.

Ashgabat — 2 nights

Ak Altyn Hotel 4*

Accommodation in Ashgabat is planned at Ak Altyn Hotel, a centrally located hotel with convenient access to the main sightseeing areas, restaurants and major city attractions.

The hotel is officially classified as a 4-star property, although it is an older-established hotel with a more traditional interior style compared with newer luxury hotels in Ashgabat. We use Ak Altyn because of its practical location, reliable service and easy access to the main places included in the city sightseeing programme.

Breakfast is included. Twin, double or single room arrangements can be provided according to the confirmed booking.

Turkmenistan Visa Information

Turkmenistan now issues tourist visas electronically, and a separate Letter of Invitation (LOI) is no longer required.

Once your tour is confirmed, we tell you exactly what to send — usually a passport scan, a recent photo and a few personal details — then prepare and check your application before submission. Processing takes 7 business days as standard, or 3 days / 24 hours with urgent options. The final decision is made by the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan.

After approval, keep a digital and a printed copy of your e-Visa with your passport. e-Visa assistance is included in this tour; official visa fees are paid separately.

I was able to experience sunny Turkmenistan and its incredible culture through Darvaza Tours. It was truly an unforgettable experience where I was able to make some wonderful memories that I will be sharing for many years to come. Darvaza Tours made the Visa application process so easy, and were helpful and responsive every step of the way. I applied several months before my tour started, and by the time I was ready to fly to Turkmenistan I had all the information I needed for a smooth entrance. Once landing in Ashgabat, I was greeted by Aiza who was absolutely wonderful and helpful. Her willingness to share her culture and country with me made the experience special, and by the end of my 3 day trip I considered her a good friend. Our drivers in Ashgabat and to Darvaza were also fantastic, and we shared many good memories along the road. Darvaza Tours was able to give me one of the most incredible experiences of my life and there will always be a place in my heart for sunny Turkmenistan!

Awesome experience from the start to the end. Getting the LOI was a breeze with Darvaza tour letting us know exactly what information was needed and they always responded in a timely manner which really made us feel confident about the tour. Upon arrival in Ashgabat we were greeted by Aiza who turned out to be a fantastic tour guide - she covered everything we wanted to see and made sure that we felt comfortable at all times. I couldn’t be any happier with our time spent with her throughout the tours. Our drivers were professional at all times and really gave us confidence as they navigated some difficult road conditions. I would without a doubt recommend Darvaza tours to anybody including my friends and family that decide to make the journey to the wonderful country of Turkmenistan. I hope to return again one day. Thank you so much

I had a wonderful experience travelling through Turkmenistan in my private tour. The whole trip was well organised from start to finish, and communication before the tour was always quick. My guide Aiza was perfect, she was like my best friend throughout the whole trip. And drivers were experienced. The drivers were very experienced and knew the routes well, so we always reached our destinations smoothly and without delays. In the future, I would love to come back to Turkmenistan with my friends for a longer trip and explore more of the country. I would also be happy to recommend Darvaza Tour to friends and anyone I know who is planning to visit Turkmenistan.
