Turkmenistan Itinerary 2026: Best 3, 5, 7 & 9-Day Routes

Planning a Turkmenistan itinerary comes down to three things: how many days you have, where you enter and leave the country, and which regions matter most to you. Distances between Ashgabat, Darvaza, Merv, Kunya-Urgench, Yangykala Canyon and Koytendag are long, so the right route makes a real difference to your trip.
Below we compare our 3, 5, 7 and 9-day Turkmenistan itineraries, from fast routes for travellers crossing between Bukhara and Khiva to in-depth journeys through western and eastern Turkmenistan. Every route can be adapted to your arrival point, departure point and interests.
Quick answer
Most first-time visitors need 5–7 days in Turkmenistan. Choose 3 days if you are crossing between Bukhara and Khiva, 5 days for maximum highlights at a fast pace, 7 days for the best balance, and 9 days to add remote regions such as Koytendag.

How Many Days Do You Need in Turkmenistan?
The right number of days depends less on how much you want to see and more on two practical questions: where you enter and leave Turkmenistan, and how much time you are happy to spend on the road. Most routes either cross the country between Bukhara (Farap border) and Khiva (Shavat border), or start and finish in Ashgabat.
3 days covers the essentials on a fast crossing between Bukhara and Khiva. 5 days adds western Turkmenistan, including Nokhur, Kow-Ata and Yangykala Canyon, at an intensive pace. 7 days is the best balance for first-time visitors, with more time on the Caspian coast and fewer very long driving days. 9 days takes you further east to Koytendag and the Dinosaur Plateau.
3-Day Turkmenistan Itinerary
A 3-day Turkmenistan itinerary is designed for travellers crossing between Bukhara and Khiva who want to see the country’s essential highlights on the way. The pace is fast, but in one continuous overland journey you visit Ancient Merv, Ashgabat, the Darvaza Gas Crater and Kunya-Urgench.
The route runs in either direction, Farap → Shavat or Shavat → Farap, so it fits easily into a wider Uzbekistan trip.
01 Farap → Ancient Merv → Ashgabat
Cross the Farap border near Bukhara, where your guide and driver meet you, and continue to Ancient Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore Gyaur Kala, Erk Kala, Kyz Kala and the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, then drive across the desert to Ashgabat for the night.
02 Ashgabat → Karakum Desert → Darvaza
Spend the morning discovering Ashgabat, the white-marble capital, then head north into the Karakum Desert. Stop at the water and mud craters on the way and reach the Darvaza Gas Crater in time for sunset and the glowing crater after dark.
03 Darvaza → Kunya-Urgench → Shavat
After breakfast at camp, drive north via Dashoguz to UNESCO-listed Kunya-Urgench and explore the Kutlug Timur Minaret, the Turabek Khanum Mausoleum and other medieval monuments. Continue to the Shavat border for the short onward transfer to Khiva.
5-Day Turkmenistan Itinerary
A 5-day Turkmenistan itinerary is built for travellers who want to see as much of the country as possible in limited time. Compared with the 3-day route, it adds western Turkmenistan, with the Kow-Ata underground lake, the mountain village of Nokhur, the Caspian coast at Turkmenbashi and Yangykala Canyon, while still covering Merv, Ashgabat, Darvaza and Kunya-Urgench.
This is the most intensive route in this guide, with several long driving days. In return, few 5-day trips combine Silk Road history, desert, mountains and the Caspian in one journey. Like the 3-day route, it runs Farap → Shavat or in reverse.
01 Farap → Ancient Merv → Ashgabat
Cross the Farap border near Bukhara and meet your guide and driver. Continue to Ancient Merv, the great Silk Road city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, then drive on to Ashgabat for the night.
02 Ashgabat → Kow-Ata → Nokhur → Turkmenbashi
Head west along the Kopetdag mountains to the Kow-Ata underground lake, where you can swim in warm mineral water inside a cave. Visit the traditional mountain village of Nokhur, then continue across the desert to Turkmenbashi on the Caspian Sea.
03 Turkmenbashi → Yangykala Canyon → Ashgabat
Drive off-road to Yangykala Canyon, whose red, pink and white cliffs are one of the most dramatic landscapes in Central Asia. After lunch, return east via Balkanabat to Ashgabat. This is the longest day of the route.
04 Ashgabat → Karakum Desert → Darvaza
Explore Ashgabat, the white-marble capital, in the morning, then head north into the Karakum Desert. Stop at the water and mud craters before reaching the Darvaza Gas Crater for sunset and the glowing crater after dark.
05 Darvaza → Kunya-Urgench → Shavat
After breakfast at camp, drive north via Dashoguz to UNESCO-listed Kunya-Urgench and its medieval minarets and mausoleums. Continue to the Shavat border for the short onward transfer to Khiva.
7-Day Turkmenistan Itinerary
A 7-day Turkmenistan itinerary is the best balance for most first-time visitors. It covers the same classic highlights as the shorter routes: Ancient Merv, Ashgabat, the Darvaza Gas Crater and Kunya-Urgench. It also gives western Turkmenistan the time it deserves, with a night at Yangykala Canyon, the Caspian coast at Turkmenbashi and Awaza, Nokhur and the Kow-Ata underground lake.
Driving days are more evenly spread than on the 5-day route, and there is time for a proper Ashgabat city tour and Nisa. The route starts in Ashgabat and finishes at the Shavat border near Khiva.
01 Ashgabat → Akhal-Teke Farm → Yangykala Canyon
Meet your guide in Ashgabat and head west, stopping at a farm to see the famous Akhal-Teke horses. Continue across the desert to Yangykala Canyon and walk along the rim as the late-afternoon light turns the cliffs red, pink and white.
02 Yangykala → Turkmenbashi → Awaza
After sunrise over the canyon, drive to Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan's port on the Caspian Sea. Explore the old town and harbour, have lunch by the sea and spend the afternoon on the promenade of the Awaza resort area. This is the most relaxed day of the trip.
03 Turkmenbashi → Nokhur → Kow-Ata → Ashgabat
Return east via Balkanabat to the Kopetdag mountains. Visit the traditional village of Nokhur, known for its unique customs and cemetery decorated with mountain-goat horns, then swim in the warm mineral water of the Kow-Ata underground lake before reaching Ashgabat.
04 Ashgabat → Mary → Ancient Merv
Take the new highway east to Mary and spend the afternoon at Ancient Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore Erk Kala, Gyaur Kala, Kyz Kala, the Askhab Mausoleums and the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar.
05 Mary → Nisa → Ashgabat City Tour
06 Ashgabat → Karakum Desert → Darvaza
Browse the Altyn Asyr (Tolkuchka) Bazaar and the Carpet Museum in the morning, then drive north into the Karakum Desert. Reach the Darvaza Gas Crater for sunset and stay to see the crater glowing after dark.
07 Darvaza → Kunya-Urgench → Shavat
Watch sunrise over the crater, then drive north via Dashoguz to UNESCO-listed Kunya-Urgench, with the Kutlug Timur Minaret, the Turabek Khanum Mausoleum and the Kyrk Molla hill. The tour ends at the Shavat border for the short onward transfer to Khiva.
9-Day Turkmenistan Itinerary
A 9-day Turkmenistan itinerary is for travellers who want to go beyond the classic route and see regions few visitors reach. Besides Ashgabat, Yangykala Canyon, Ancient Merv and the Darvaza Gas Crater, it crosses the whole country to the Koytendag Mountains in the far east, home to the Dinosaur Plateau, the Umbar-Dere gorge and Kyrk Gyz.
A domestic flight from Balkanabat to Kerki links western and eastern Turkmenistan and saves a full day of driving. The route starts and finishes in Ashgabat, which makes it easy to combine with international flights.
01 Arrival in Ashgabat
Arrive at Ashgabat International Airport, where your guide meets you and transfers you to the hotel. Depending on your flight time, rest after the journey or take a first evening walk through the white-marble capital.
02 Ashgabat → Kow-Ata → Nokhur → Yangykala
Drive west along the Kopetdag mountains to swim in the Kow-Ata underground lake and visit the traditional village of Nokhur. Continue across the desert to Yangykala Canyon to see its colourful cliffs in the evening light.
03 Yangykala → Balkanabat ✈ Kerki → Koytendag
Drive to Balkanabat for the domestic flight east to Kerki on the Amu Darya river. From there, continue via Gaynarbaba into the Koytendag Mountains, the most remote and least visited region of Turkmenistan.
04 Full Day in Koytendag
Spend a full day exploring Koytendag. Walk among hundreds of dinosaur footprints on the Dinosaur Plateau, hike into the Umbar-Dere gorge with its waterfall, and visit the sacred site of Kyrk Gyz, surrounded by some of the wildest mountain scenery in the country.
05 Koytendag → Turkmenabat
Leave the mountains and drive north along the Amu Darya valley to Turkmenabat, the main city of eastern Turkmenistan, with time to explore its bazaar and riverside in the afternoon.
06 Turkmenabat → Ancient Merv → Mary
Take the new highway west to Ancient Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the great cities of the Silk Road. Explore Erk Kala, Gyaur Kala, Kyz Kala and the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar before checking in to your hotel in Mary.
07 Mary → Ashgabat City Tour
Return west to the capital, with a cultural stop on the way. In the afternoon, discover Ashgabat: the Independence Monument, the Neutrality Arch, the Ertugrul Gazi Mosque and the city's striking white-marble boulevards.
08 Ashgabat → Karakum Desert → Darvaza
Drive north into the Karakum Desert, stopping at the water and mud craters on the way. Reach the Darvaza Gas Crater for sunset and stay to see it glowing after dark.
09 Darvaza → Ashgabat → Departure
Watch sunrise over the crater, then return to Ashgabat. Depending on your flight time, enjoy some last free time in the city before your transfer to the airport.

How many days do you need in Turkmenistan?
Most first-time visitors need 5–7 days to see Ashgabat, the Darvaza Gas Crater, Ancient Merv and Kunya-Urgench without rushing. Three days is enough for a fast crossing between Bukhara and Khiva, while 9 days lets you add remote regions such as Koytendag.
Can you visit the Darvaza Gas Crater in one day?
It is about 4 hours' drive from Ashgabat, so a same-day return is possible but tiring. We recommend staying overnight at the yurt camp to see the crater at sunset and after dark, which is included on all our routes.
Can I combine Turkmenistan with Uzbekistan?
Yes. Our 3 and 5-day routes run between the Farap border near Bukhara and the Shavat border near Khiva, in either direction, and the 7-day route finishes at Shavat. They fit easily into a wider Uzbekistan trip.
Do I need a visa and a guide for Turkmenistan?
Most visitors need a tourist e-Visa, and tourists travel with a licensed operator and guide. Darvaza Tour arranges e-Visa support and provides a licensed guide on every itinerary.
What is the best time of year for these itineraries?
April–May and September–October offer the most comfortable temperatures for desert, mountain and city sightseeing. Summer is very hot in the Karakum Desert, and winter nights at Darvaza can drop below freezing.
Can these itineraries be customised?
Yes. All our tours are private, so we can change the start and end points, add or remove days, adjust the hotel level and combine routes to match your dates and interests.
